This afternoon, Rep. Al Wynn announced his resignation as the United States Representative for the 4th District to join the Washington law firm Dickstein Shapiro LLP, as a partner. He will step down in June.
In a statement, Wynn described the great honor of serving in Congress, but said, “[I]t is time to move into another phase of my life and I am very excited to be joining such an outstanding firm."
He also cited the benefits his early departure would grant to Donna Edwards, who handily defeated him in the bitterly-contested Feb. 12 primary.
“My leaving early will also allow our Democratic nominee Donna Edwards the opportunity to successfully navigate a special election and be sworn in this summer,” he said.
“This will not only give her seniority in the incoming Congressional class of ’09, but more importantly, will allow her to get off to a fast start in serving the citizens of our community.”
Wynn's departure sets in motions two new rounds of voting in the district that encompasses Montgomery and Prince George's Counties, with special primary and special general elections.
Seeming to leave all acrimony behind, Wynn offered her “my best wishes and stand ready to assist in any way possible.”
