Anthony Brown and Nancy Kopp spoiling your clambake fun? You rock on anyway, Peter.

Winners

Losers

David Bliden

He announced that he'll be leaving the Maryland Association of Counties in January after a prolific 17 year-stint as executive director.

Terry Speigner and Arthur Turner

The Prince George's Democratic Central Committee members are coming under increasing pressure for their ouster by labor interests upset with their lack of support for their causes.

Martin O'Malley

News broke of his bread-breaking with Orioles owner and former rival Peter Angelos. Plus he received an honorary degree from National University of Ireland in Galway.

Ulysses Currie

His legal defense fund is going to have to come out of his pocket after he was denied the use of campaign funds. Plus the case against him seems to be growing.

Bruce Lamdin

This Baltimore County District judge is back on the bench this week after his suspension for using profane language in court.

Jack Johnson

As if he did not have enough problems, a suspect in the murder of a Prince George's County police officer is apparently killed while in solitary confinement, creating an uproar in the community.

Nancy Kopp

She put her foot down (and had Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown on her side) when she insisted the July 16 BPW meeting remain in Annapolis.

Peter Franchot

He better hope O'Malley doesn't tip off the state police won't be watching, as he'll be speeding to the Tawes crab and clambake.

Tom Schaller

The UMBC professor landed an op-ed in the New York Times.

Thomas Bromwell

The former state senator started his long prison term in Massachusetts this week.

Give Me a Break!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've read the comments by James W. Allen Jr. and I read the letter from the Metropolitan Washington Council of the AFL-
CIO and wish to offer my translation of the intent and reality of the
unions' message. (The original letter can be viewed on the
Gazette's website: http://www.gazette.net/links/ )

For the past 72 years, we have had a good thing going – a
relationship that benefited our membership and your agenda. However,
the MWC AFL-CIO has decided that it was best to turn on our
Democratic Party brothers. We found it outrageous that we were
caught with our pants down and did not realize such a large, non-
union retail establishment was coming to Prince George's County.
Forget the fact that Wegman's has or will be opening stores in
Baltimore County, Anne Arundel County, Fairfax and Loudon Counties.
Before we knew it, the deal was done for a store in Prince George's
and the best we could do is complain about the traffic impact. Do
you realize how popular a store like Wegman's is? Not only for the
community, but also its contented workforce?

Well, to have a member of the Democratic Party challenge our right to
complain about traffic is beyond any sort of reconciliation. And
then to have the Chairman of the County Party stand-up to support his
member's right to free speech warrants his removal from office. To
publically pronounce that a grocery store is good for the community
is a irremovable wedge that severs our 72 year marriage.

To all elected officials in Prince George's County – we have drawn a
line in the sand. Since you have not denounced the Chairman's
support of his Central Committee Member, nor have you renounced that
the member was wrong for highlighting our negligence at allowing
Wegman's into Prince George's County; WE WILL NOT RETURN YOUR PHONE
CALLS.

2008 is a presidential election year and from the top of the ticket
to the bottom, Democrats in Prince George's will win. We want to
prove to everyone that you can win without the Unions.

To facilitate this demonstration of our impotence, we are listing
several unrealistic demands that must be met if you wish to have your
phone calls returned:

+ Publically state, as you have for the past 72 years, that you
support labor's right to organize.
+ Publically state, as you have for the past 72 years, that unionized
state employees should not bear the burden of balancing the state
budget.
+ Add the state government's budget another agency to protect
underperforming school system employees.
+ Publically state that it is bad to beat-up Metro bus drivers.
+ Support our County Extortion Program.
+ Since we're so tough and smart, include us in your decision making.
+ Punish the Central Committee Chair and Vice Chair for being Chair
and Vice Chair.

Until you agree to these demands, we won't return your phone calls,
we will continue to demonstrate our irrelevance in county politics,
and we will probable fail at stopping another Wal-Mart from opening
in the County.

Screw our 72 year relationship. If you don't help us, maybe we'll
turn to the Republicans.

Terry Speinger and Arthur Turner

Speinger and Turner are anti-union and should have been removed from their positions in October after making defamatory remarks about a union officer and unions. This committee will never be the same until these guys are removed from their positions. First of all they are really republicans fronting, like some of the politicians in Prince Georges County as Democrats.
