It remains to be seen how much the "moneybomb" organized by Ron Paul supporters and left-leaning bloggers will bring in today, but it looks like it will be a drop in the bucket (currently $127,000) compared to the multi-millions Paul was able to haul on his flash fundraising days.
That probably has something to do with the Paul side's hearts not being in it. The New York Times said this morning that Democratic bloggers Jane Hamsher and Glenn Greenwald were the ones really 'calling the shots,' and it couldn't have been any more true in that the Paul-style libertarian Republicans will not see a nickel toward promoting one of their own. "We'll be using [the money] soon," Hamsher says, "to recruit primary challengers to corporatist Bush enablers on both sides of the aisle."
'Both sides of the aisle?' Don't think so.
Collins Bailey: Campaign PhotoCase-in-point: why, if this is a joint effort between progressive Democrats and libertarian Republicans, is there talk of future primary challengers when Collins Bailey is already in the race against Steny Hoyer?
Bailey is the guy who organized a full slate of Ron Paul delegates and congressional candidates in 7 of Maryland's 8 districts -- something the state GOP failed to do. He has shown the initiative, meeting with Republican groups and the media, to promote his candidacy.
His biggest problem is a lack of funds. He had $600 in cash on hand at the end of last quarter (compared to Steny's $1.5 million).
If the plan was to swing in with a big independent expenditure effort on behalf of Bailey, get his name recognition up and blast Hoyer repeatedly, perhaps they could have excited the Ron Paul base? It's not like these people aren't believers. They raised tens of millions for an quixotic Texas congressman, for crying out loud! Having an opponent with the profile of Hoyer's would have made it all the more marketable to that crowd.
Now, maybe that has been the plan all along, and they're just being low key about it... OK, not likely. And that's why this effort fell far short of Ron Paul's "moneybombs."
Truth is, 'Strangebedfellows' was neither -- it was typical and it was partisan, and it will not have the intended impact.

Under our current leadership
Under our current leadership in Congress there will be no end to the commitment of U.S. troops in Iraq. We are now building permanent bases in Iraq, something that was emphatically stated that this nation would not do. Unfortunately, mistakes have been made in our foreign policy going back many years, causing problems that we now are facing. To make matters worse, Congress has focused on political posturing so they can take credit if things go well and distance themselves if things do not go well. The discussions we are now having should have been had before troops were committed. Congress has neglected its Constitutional responsibility of declaring, and if declaring, funding the war. I do not want the 535 elected leaders in the Congress and Senate to be conducting the day-to-day operations of our military. I do not believe that our elected leaders in Congress have been truthful with the American public about their intentions. Our soldiers should have been properly equipped before being sent into battle. We must have a more humble foreign policy and be more judicious about the use of our troops and more judicious about the use of force. I am opposed to nation building. We have troops in 130 countries and have more than 700 bases overseas. This is a huge expense to the American taxpayer. Our economic liberty as well as our national security depend on our getting our financial and legislative house in order both domestically and militarily. Oil became the global currency in the 1970s. We are in Iraq and policing the world because of oil. We have enough oil reserves within the territorial boundaries of the United States to supply all our energy needs. It is because of the policies coming out of Washington in the last 27 years that we are in the current situation. ‘‘We the people” must require our elected leaders to remove the obstacles placed on American industry, balance the budget and start paying off the national debt. If we don’t, ‘‘we the people” will have to continue to finance a global military complex with taxes and a deflated dollar. ________________ Submited by : Libros Gratis
Bailey a statesmen - Hoyer maj. leader of the Pelosi Congress
Hoyer raises all his $ mostly from PACs & extreme liberal-cause organizations.
Then he spends it on other Congressional campaigns to buy their votes to keep his power as majority leader. Make no mistake, Hoyer’s goal has always been to be the SotH, but Pelosi’s California’s power base is just a bit stronger than Steny’s. (If it weren’t for that goal, he’d be on Obama’s short list for VP.) He’ll spend just what he thinks he has to in MD’s 5th to promote the “Hoyer Hoax” that he protects Pax River, etc., in order to keep his seat.
Obviously Bailey is a statesman and constitutionalist candidate in the truest sense.
If the voters ever wake up and link Hoyer’s name – as majority leader – to the lousy record of the Pelosi Congress, MD’s 5th would have a REAL, Full-Time Representative!
Thanks alot for putting this
Thanks alot for putting this story on your front page! I had no problem finding it. I'm getting ready to go get some ice cream.
Wally is invited to join Wallace on WUA
"Now, maybe that has been the plan all along, and they're just being low key about it... OK, not likely. And that's why this effort fell far short of Ron Paul's "moneybombs"
hmm....Since, I have been doing my show I have involved myself with many efforts. One of which is to invite Collins Bailey on my show numerous times to share his powerful demonstration as a future Congressional Statesman. Also, I was the person who decided to invite Collins to join www.freedomslate08.com which was a DIRECT opportunity for a money bomb to as you said:
"have excited the Ron Paul base? It's not like these people aren't believers."
Wally, you are invited on my show ANYTIME to discuss your ideas about the Strange Bedfellows project (which I am directly involved) as you said:
"Truth is, 'Strangebedfellows' was neither -- it was typical and it was partisan, and it will not have the intended impact."
When is a good morning for you to join me? Tomorrow is not good as I have...um...oh yeah Collins Bailey joining me AGAIN!! We will be discussing the question of Strange Bedfellows impact and the support from Democrats in his district. 9am on Break The Matrix.
OH!! and the ads already put out by SBF vote for it here:
Wally please read this before you accept the invitation to come on my show:

People can still always donate to Collins
If you're against FISA/Hoyer, you can always send a donation to the Collins Bailey campaign directly :)
http://baileyforuscongress.com/donate.php
A lot of people want Hoyer out, but they need to ask themselves if they want to replace him with a Hoyer-lite liberal or a Constitutional Republican like Bailey. If you look at Hoyer's record, it's filled with horrible votes. FISA isn't the first time that Hoyer messed up.
It's time the 5th District was represented by someone who will stand up for its constituents' rights
No Ron Paulian control over funds from $ bomb
Hear, hear.
I was going to donate. I certainly agitated enough against FISA and really liked the idea of enhancing civil liberties support with a coalition on issues where we see eye to eye with the left.
I still do like that idea, but for right now it seems like only an idea. If Ron Paulians shared control over the money or it went to jointly supported candidates/programs etc. I'd be donating.
With luck, we'll iron out the bugs, because a left/right civil liberties joint venture is an idea whose time SHOULD be now.
