Friday political trivia: In the same Gov groove

Like the State of Maryland, the Commonwealth of Kentucky has elected only two Republican governors in the last 50 years. Democrats have controlled every other term.

Since J. Millard Tawes was elected in 1958, the two Republicans to win were Spiro Agnew in 1966 and Bob Ehrlich in 2002.

Likewise, Kentucky's two Republicans since 1958: Louie B. Gunn in 1967 and Ernie Fletcher in 2003.

Both Ehrlich and Fletcher lost to Democrats when they sought re-election in the past two years.

The key difference comes in the length of office holders. All of Maryland's Democratic governors in those years (save acting governor Blair Lee III) served two terms. The Kentucky state constitution only allowed a single four year term until an amendment passed in 1992.
