Donna Edwards’ new friends

Rep. Al Wynn simply obliterated his $1.5 million campaign warchest in his losing bid to fend off Donna Edwards, reporting just over $13,000 in cash on hand at the end of the financial quarter.

Meanwhile Edwards finished with a healthy $236,000 reserve left, having spent roughly $540,000 – a little more than a third of what Wynn dropped.

And not surprisingly, several of Wynn’s big money supporters have found their way into Edwards’ financial reports this quarter.

One of the interesting ones is the American Federation of Government Employees, who only gave Wynn $500 in 2007, but sent Edwards $2,500 last month. Similarly, the Transport Workers Union had given Wynn $1,000, and now Edwards $2,500.

At least the National Air Traffic Controllers Association and the United Transportation Union are consistent, each giving Wynn $5,000 over the last year and Edwards $5,000 last quarter.

Wynn-endorsing NARAL gave her $2,500, while Planned Parenthood’s PAC sent $2,500. That group’s CEO, Cecile Richards, individually donated $500 to Edwards just hours after the primary, though since she never personally gave money to Wynn, could plead she silently favored Edwards all along (not likely).

Members of the tight-knit Congressional Black Caucus have also gotten behind Edwards. Elijah Cummings, who had given Wynn $5,000, kicked in $3,000 for her in March, while Charlie Rangel’s PAC and personal committee gave her a combined $7,000 in February. He had only given Wynn $6,000.

In all, Edwards raised $30,000 off once Wynn-backing committees alone in the last quarter. Next quarter's reports should be even more interesting, as the news of her added seniority will cause a surge in influence-seeking donors.

More of the same?

For all those people who voted for Edwards, it looks like Donna's going to be bringing in more of the same. Who you take money from in politics speaks volumes about what type of politician you are.

Money Stinks

Keep in mind that she alone can not change the rules of the game, but the game really does stink.

I have known Donna for several years now and I do believe her agenda is genuine. Let's see how effective she will be in Congress. Lord knows we have had no real representation for the past 13 years.
