The impending retirement of the two top Republicans on the House Armed Services Committee has set off a long race to climb to ranking member – one in which Rep. Roscoe Bartlett is locked.
The current ranking member, California Rep. Duncan Hunter, announced early in 2007 that he would run for the presidency rather than re-election. Second in-line was Rep. Jim Saxton of New Jersey, but he announced his plans to retire due to health reasons last November.
Bartlett, who quietly announced his intention to seek the top spot, will likely face-off against Rep. John McHugh of New York.
Along with McHugh Republican Rep. Terry Everrett of Alabama also currently ranks above Bartlett, though it is not yet clear if he is vying for the position. Texas Rep. Mac Thornberry is also interested in running.
No telling whether age will be considered as a factor. Bartlett is 81, while McHugh and Thornberry are 59 and 49.
