Kaine to party in Maryland

Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine (D) will swing through Maryland later this month to attend the Maryland Democratic Party's "United for Change" Gala.

"We're thrilled Gov. Kaine is joining our celebration and just as thrilled to be able to export so much of our volunteer talent and energy to ensure an Obama/Biden victory in Virginia and Pennsylvania," state party Chair Michael Cryor said in a statement. "We're sending well over a thousand volunteers north and south every week so we're raising the funds necessary to keep that operation running on all cylinders up to and including Election Day."

Governors jam

It's a funny thing about Maryland. There is so much footage and video of Gov. Martin O'Malley dancing around on stage with his band that we often forget how other states react when they see their governors getting down with the sound.

Gov. Tim Kaine (D-Virginia): NGA PhotoGov. Tim Kaine (D-Virginia): NGA PhotoDue to a "scheduling problem," PolitickerMD.com has learned that Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine will not attend tomorrow night's Unity '08 Fundraiser for the Maryland Democratic State Central Committee as previously planned.

The State Democratic Party learned of Kaine's cancellation earlier today.

Kaine's appearance at the Baltimore event was announced on July 11, just as speculation over his vice presidential prospects were ramping up. Some believed he would in a secret meeting with presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama earlier today, but Kaine has insisted otherwise.

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, Washington, D.C., Mayor Adrian Fenty, along with Gov. Martin O'Malley, the Democratic congressional delegation and state legislative leaders are still slated to attend the event at the Iguana Cantina. Over a thousand people are expected, with admission starting at $50.

Source: Kaine pulls out of '08 Unity fundraiser

A source says that Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine is no longer attending tomorrow night's '08 Unity Fundraiser for the State Democratic Central Committee at Iguana Catina in Baltimore.

Mention of Kaine at the event has been removed from the party's website, and Kaine was not identified with the other notable out-of-state guests Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell and Washington D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty in a promotional e-mail.

Speculation that Kaine will be Barack Obama's choice for vice president is at a crescendo. On the day his attendance at the fundraiser was announced two and a half weeks ago, the Washington Post's Chris Cillizza ranked Kaine number one on his list of potential picks, and media speculation has been climbing ever since.

O'Malley jokes about 'Vice President Kaine,' serious about Ehrlich and spying

Gov. Martin O'Malley (D)Gov. Martin O'Malley (D)Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) played the jester in a joint appearance with Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine (D) and Washington D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty on WTOP's 'Hands Across the Potomac,' a show that brings regional leaders together to talk about shared issues.

And while local issues took precedence this morning, host Mark Segraves and Gov. O'Malley could not ignore the elephant in the room: media buzz about Kaine's prospects as a the Democratic vice presidential candidate.

The front page of today's Washington Post listed the Virginia governor as at the top of Barack Obama's shortlist for potential picks. Politico has also reported that he "ranks very, very high on the short list," according to someone close to a senior Obama aide.

O'Malley was first to broach the subject with a joke. Kaine was talking about a Metro funding summit to reduce traffic congestion when his fellow governor chimed in, "We're confident that Vice President Kaine will be a terrific advocate for this at the federal level."

For the most part, Kaine was coy on how serious his talks with the Obama campaign are.

Killing his oath softly

Allow me to join the round of boos…I mean, editorial boards in calling out Governor Martin O’Malley (D) for not doing anything about the death penalty. First in The Washington Times, whose editorial board states, “Unlike his Virginia counterpart [Gov. Tim Kaine (D)] who has decided to uphold the law, Mr. O’Malley has chosen to snooker it. We understand that an untold number of Americans and politicians wrestle with the morality of the death penalty. But Mr. O'Malley must understand, too, that the law is the law, and he has sworn to uphold the U.S. Constitution and Maryland state law.”

The Capital editorial board who clearly states that they are for what the people want, if they want to repeal the death penalty, but “[they] do have a problem with endless procrastination, legalistic nitpicking and waiting on the outcome of jury rigged studies.” It should be noted that they started off by saying that Maryland is on its way to being a symbolic state. I thought we were already there with all of the official state “stuff” we have on the symbol list.

In any event, O’Malley is showing the same lackadaisical attitude that was on display when it came to the budget last year. We were facing a budget deficit that ranged from $1.3-1.7 billion dollars. Instead of jumping into looking at what he could do budget wise to lessen the blow for the following year, he took a wait and see approach while attempting to fire the alleged incompetent and consumer hating Public Service Commission to bring on his own alleged professional, competent and consumer friendly PSC in hopes of rolling back the BGE rate hikes. By the way, how did that go and how much more money did he give Steve Larsen?
