Dixon hires former Gov. Mandel’s defense attorney

Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon (D) has hired a new lawyer according the Examiner.

Dixon is currently under investigation for public corruption for failing to report gifts on her financial disclosures as required by law.

Arnold M. Weiner, a defense attorney, helped defend former Gov. Marvin Mandel’s (D-Baltimore) trial in 1977. Mandel, who was charged with mail fraud and racketeering, was originally found guilty, but the case was eventually overturned.

“I can only say at this point that she is a great mayor and I am looking forward to representing her,” Weiner told the Examiner. “But I’m relatively new to the case so I don’t want to say too much.”

Will allegations curtail Dixon’s political future?

Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon: Campaign photoBaltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon: Campaign photoIn the midst of investigations and allegations of public corruption surrounding Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon (D), it remains unclear what effect the fiasco will have on her public image and political future.

Solid facts surrounding her relationship with Ronald H. Lipscomb remain unclear, but Dixon acknowledged Monday that she had a personal relationship with the prominent developer in 2003 and 2004, according the Baltimore Sun.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Dixon vowed: “I’m gonna survive this, because I only take this business of what I do one day at a time.”

Even if Dixon does survive, and isn’t forced to resign, the political damage could be extensive. According to Byron Warnken, a law professor at the University of Baltimore, Dixon faces “absolute, absolute political problems.”

“I think that if she had higher political office aspirations” then they are in “serious jeopardy,” he told PolitickerMD.com.

    Ethics, pumps and 'Choo’s'

Perhaps this is one of those situations where there is enough blame to go around.

First here is what we know. We know that Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon (D) is being investigated into whether or not she received gifts for approving city incentives that favor developers. In particular is developer Ronald Lipscomb. Lipscomb and Dixon, who were separated from their respective spouses for quite sometime, acknowledged that they had a personal relationship between 2003 and 2004. During the course of the relationship, they had spent a lot of time traveling and a lot of time shopping. Those shopping strips involved dropping a lot of money in a single store. Also a fact is that Dixon did not make full disclosures when she filed her ethics reports. This is where I begin.
