Capital: Nader lands in Annapolis, lambasts slots

Ralph Nader flew into Annapolis on Wednesday to voice his opposition to November's slots referendum, according to The Capital.

"We oppose it because gambling is a sign of moral and economic decay," Nader said at a press conference. "Its benefits have been always exaggerated and its negatives have been under-emphasized."

    Examiner: Nader gets name on MD ballot

    Presidential candidate Ralph Nader has a spot on Maryland's November ballot.

    According to The Examiner, Campaign workers turned in over 23,000 signatures to the Maryland State Board of Elections last week to form a new independent party and get Nader on the Ballot. The campaign needed a minimum of 10,000 signatures from registered voters to get his name on the ballot.

    In 2000, Nader received 53,768 votes in Maryland running as a Green Party candidate and ran as a Populist candidate in 2004 to receive 11,854 votes.

    Maryland Greens to hold nominating assembly

    The Green PartyThe Green PartyThe Maryland Green Party plans to meet next Saturday, May 3, at Towson University to elect delegates for its national presidential nominating convention.

    The Maryland assembly is entitled to send 16 delegates to the Chicago convention to be held July 10 to 13. There are currently 7,860 registered members of the Green Party in Maryland, making it the state’s third largest political affiliation.

    Among those seeking the nomination are former Georgia Rep. Cynthia McKinney, 2004 nominee Kent Mesplay, West Virginia gubernatorial and Senate candidate Jesse Johnson, party spokeswoman and Kat Swift. Ralph Nader, whose 2000 candidacy raised the party’s profile, will run as an independent.

    Local professor vies for Green Party nomination

    The Green PartyThe Green PartyDr. Jared A. Ball, an assistant professor of communications studies at Morgan State University in Baltimore, is seeking the Green Party's presidential nomination. Ball, who will be one of as many as seven potential Green candidates, is also a radio host for WPFW 89.3 FM Pacifica Radio in Washington, DC.

    The professor, who could not be reached for immediate comment, is also the Editor-at-Large of the Words, Beats, and Life Global Journal of Hip-Hop Culture. In addition, Ball is the founder and creator of FreeMix Radio: The Original Mixtape Radio Show, a monthly hip-hop mixtape devoted to the practice of emancipatory journalism.

    On his campaign website, JaredBall.com, the professor said he was running because of the "horrendous and entirely unacceptable conditions of a majority of the people of this nation and world."
