Dixon hires former Gov. Mandel’s defense attorney

Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon (D) has hired a new lawyer according the Examiner.

Dixon is currently under investigation for public corruption for failing to report gifts on her financial disclosures as required by law.

Arnold M. Weiner, a defense attorney, helped defend former Gov. Marvin Mandel’s (D-Baltimore) trial in 1977. Mandel, who was charged with mail fraud and racketeering, was originally found guilty, but the case was eventually overturned.

“I can only say at this point that she is a great mayor and I am looking forward to representing her,” Weiner told the Examiner. “But I’m relatively new to the case so I don’t want to say too much.”

Why everyone wants to be Rudin

We feel like someone mentioned this along the way (The Gazette perhaps?), but NPR's Ken Rudin digs up this piece of history (and campaign button) about Fourth district Republican Peter James.

The current Peter James, who lost to Donna Edwards (D) on June 17 to fill the seat vacated by Albert Wynn (D), is 52 years old. The senior Peter James ran not against [Spiro] Agnew in '66 but in the GOP primary in 1970, after Agnew had gone off to become vice president. That James lost the primary to Agnew's administrative assistant, Stanley Blair, who in turn got crushed by Democrat Marvin Mandel in November.
