The League of Women Voters of Howard County will be holding a Congressional candidate's forum Tuesday evening.

The event will feature candidates from the 3rd and 7th Congressional Districts.

MD delegation 7-1 on revised bailout legislation

The Maryland Congressional delegation voted 7 to 1 on Friday in favor of a revised economic recovery bill.

The U.S. Senate added provisions and voted on an updated rescue bill Wednesday, after the U.S. House failed to pass a $700 billion bailout package for the financial sector on Monday.

Congress passed the revised bill on Friday 263 to 171.

Sarbanes: We need to move quickly

U.S. Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Baltimore) says he would like to move quickly to make the necessary adjustments to the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. The U.S. House failed to pass the $700 billion bailout package for the financial sector on Monday, prompting markets to post record losses.

Sarbanes, who voted for the original bill, pointed to the markets "volatility" as a key reason the legislation should be promptly adjusted and passed.

Hoyer, Cardin, Mikulski secure federal charter for KWVA

U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Mechanicsville), U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Baltimore) and U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Baltimore) joined the Korean War Veterans Association on Thursday to celebrate the enactment of legislation that grants the group a Federal Charter.

The trio was also joined by U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson (R-Texas).

“The Korean War is often referred to as the ‘forgotten’ war, and recognition of our veterans from this war is long overdue,” said Cardin in a statement. “This Federal Charter lets the nearly 1.2 million American veterans of the Korean War who are still alive know that we have not forgotten them, and we honor the sacrifice they made for our nation.”

Sarbanes raises $74K in 2Q, $390K cash on hand

U.S. Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Towson), who currently holds Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District seat, reported $74,020.55 in total contributions for the second quarter, and has $390,420.62 cash on hand, according to the Federal Election Commission

Sarbanes raised $934,367.33 in total contributions to date for this election.

Fundraising numbers were unavailable for Thomas Harris, Sarbanes' Republican opponent.

First elected in 2006, Sarbanes represents MD-3.

The Virtual Town Hall will be a free form Q&A conducted via telephone and will be held at 7:20 p.m.

“I believe that the best way to represent the Third District in Washington is through an open discussion about the most pressing issues facing America today,” said Sarbanes in a statement.

The John Sarbanes for Congress campaign released a video from one of the Maryland Democratic Party's 'Unity Picnics' -- this one at Banneker Historical Park in Baltimore County on July 13.

Attendees included Senator Ben Cardin, Represenatives Sarbanes and Elijah Cummings, congressional challengers Frank Kratovil and Jennifer Dougherty, and state Chair Michael Cryor.

The Democratic State Party has organized free picnics around the state to celebrate party unity after a long and divisive primary season.

VIDEO: Sarbanes explains Obama's website

U.S. Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Towson) gives a virtual tour of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's website in a video released by his campaign last week.

The video, created by the Sarbanes campaign's 'Social Media Consultant' George Zisiadis, features the congressman explaining the webtools available to Obama supporters and has had over 3,300 views on YouTube.

Sarbanes has aggressively used the Internet to connect with supporters in the 2008 cycle. He faces Republican Thomas Harris in November, in a race which is not seen as competitive.
