John Edwards and the death of mainstream media

John Edwards admission that he lied and dismissed reports of an affair with Rielle Hunter, a filmmaker hired to cover his presidential campaign, may have ended his public life, but did it also signify an end to the era in which the mainstream media controlled the agenda for national political journalism?

Patience, Doug Gansler, climb the ladder

John Edwards was thought by many to be on the shortlist for Barack Obama's attorney general pick, and today makes it all the more likely that he'll have to dig a bit deeper to find the right person.

He'll need someone upstanding with accomplishments of substance while having also tried some meaty cases. Even better, someone who understands politics and how to get elected. Now where could he find someone like that?

Brown goes back to Iowa

Like we previously reported, Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown is in Pennsylvania today, though unlike what we said, he is not there campaigning for Sen. Hillary Clinton. Instead he’s spending his day filling his duties as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces.

But he will definitely get his campaigning fill this weekend, as all across Iowa tomorrow, 13,485 delegates elected on Jan. 3 will meet in 99 county conventions to elect 2,500 delegates to the June 14 Democratic Party district and state conventions. There, the rest of the Iowa delegation to this summer’s Democratic National Committee Convention will be selected.

With second place finisher John Edwards out of the way, Clinton is dispatching surrogates like Brown to the state to woo the former North Carolina Senator’s 4,046 delegates.

Maryland supporters react to John Edwards' withdrawal

Del. Luiz SimmonsDel. Luiz SimmonsSimmons Backs Clinton

State supporters of the presidential campaign of former Sen. John Edwards reacted to the North Carolinian's decision to withdraw from the race.

This morning, aides to the senator announced that he would withdraw at 1 p.m. in New Orleans — at the site where he began his campaign in December 2006.

“I think he saw the locomotive of history coming down the tracks and decided to step away,” Del. Luiz Simmons told PolitickerMD.com.

Simmons thought there were “historical forces at work,” referring to the candidacies of Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Younger Glendening will likely stay behind the scenes

Ray GlendeningRay GlendeningRay Glendening, the 28-year-old son of former Gov. Parris Glendening, said he “prefers behind the scenes work” and would likely not seek elective office in Maryland.

Glendening had served as deputy national field director on Bill Richardson’s presidential campaign until the New Mexico governor ended his campaign after a disappointing finish in the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 8.

Glendening has served as a member of the Prince George’s County Democratic Central Committee since being elected in 2006. Despite that fact, Glendening said he does not envision himself seeking higher office.

Glendening won't endorse before Feb. 12 primary, but pushes Richardson for VP

Former Governor Parris Glendening, who had been supporting Bill Richardson for President, says he won’t endorse any of the remaining contenders before the February 12 Maryland primary.

“I like them all,” Glendening said of Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards.  “I will leave my political efforts and energy to the general election.”

But Glendening says he thinks Richardson would make a “great” vice president, and said he hoped Richardson would serve in the next administration if the Democrats win the White House – specifically suggesting that the Governor of New Mexico should be considered for Secretary of State.

Wynn endorses Obama

This evening, Rep. Al Wynn announced his endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama for President of the United States.

"Barack Obama brings a positive energy, a new vision and has the political courage to bring about the change this country so desperately needs on the Presidential level," he said.

Wynn, a Democrat, faces his own tough primary battle with community activist Donna Edwards for his Fourth District seat on Feb. 12, the same day Maryland's presidential primary is taking place.

The so-called ‘Chesapeake Primary' also includes Virginia and Washington D.C. No other states are voting that day.
