Montgomery Dems pick Edwards

In a 22-1 vote, the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee selected Donna Edwards as the party's nominee in the June 17 special election. Jason Jennings received one vote.

Edwards won the Democratic nomination last February over incumbent Rep. Al Wynn, who is stepping down on May 31 for the private sector. In response to the vacancy, Gov. Martin O'Malley and the state legislature created a bill allowing a party's central committee to select a nominee under certain circumstances, thereby proceeding directly to a special general election.

The Prince George's County Democratic Central Committee will meet to select its nominee on Thursday night.

Spending to the last dollar in the Fourth

With little over a week to go in the highly competitive Fourth District Democratic primary, there’s little money left to be spent as challenger Donna Edwards holds a cash-on-hand advantage of $58,000 over incumbent Rep. Al Wynn.

Edwards is reporting to hold $204,000, while Wynn is left with $146,000; though to date, he has out-raised her by a much wider margin. Wynn reports dispersing over $1 million, while Edwards has taken in $655,000.

Wynn’s advantage derives entirely from political action committees’ support. $588,000 in PAC money accounts for 58 percent of his receipts. Edwards received close to $25,000 – 4 percent of her fundraising total.

So far, Wynn has spent $955,000 while Edwards has disbursed $453,000.

She said, they said on 4th District debate

Donna Edwards will be attending the League of Women Voters Congressional Candidate Forum in Silver Spring this afternoon.

But she won't be attending the forthcoming January 8 debate sponsored by the Prince George's group People for Change. And that has organizers crying foul.

"We're trying to ask some of the tougher questions," said People for Change leader Sandra Pruitt told PolitickerMD.com. "And we're going to have everyday people ask the questions."

Organizers mailed debate invitations on November 16. Pruitt says the campaigns of Al Wynn, George Mitchell, Jason Jennings, and George McDermott gave notice that they would be attending within several days. But Pruitt didn't hear from Edwards until December 4, when she said she wouldn't be attending.

Edwards to Wynn: "You got it wrong"

LARGO - Rep. Albert R. Wynn and community activist Donna Edwards were among five candidates who took the stage for a Democratic congressional debate at Prince George’s Community College here, Thursday night.

Wynn, who is currently serving his eighth-term representing Maryland’s 4th congressional district, came under fire from Edwards, a lawyer, for his vote to give the president the authority to use force against Iraq in 2002.

“Seventy percent of Democrats got it right in regards to Iraq,” Edwards said. “Our congressman got it wrong.”
