Deibert closes her Sixth district campaign account

Robin DeibertRobin DeibertSixth district Democrat Robin Deibert, who ran unsuccessfully in the Feb. 12 primary, is eating the $10,000 loan she made to her campaign.

Well, most of it anyway.

Deibert filed papers with the Federal Elections Commission to terminate her campaign account at the end of the second financial quarter.

While she had $10,000 in debt from a personal loan, she still had about $3,800 in her campaign account. Closing the account means the cash on hand goes toward repaying her loan, so she finishes up losing only $6,200 on her failed bid.

With 10% of the vote, Deibert placed a distant third to former Frederick Mayor Jennifer Dougherty, who won with 44%, and 2006 Democratic nominee Andrew Duck's 37%.

Dougherty looks to unseat Bartlett

Jennifer Dougherty, the former mayor of Frederick and the 2008 Democratic nominee in Maryland’s Sixth Congressional District, said she would focus on a variety of issues, including the budget and energy concerns, if elected to Congress in November.

Dougherty faces an uphill battle against eight-term Republican incumbent Roscoe Bartlett in the heavily conservative district. She surprised many political pundits with her victory over Andrew Duck in the Feb. 12 primary. Duck, the 2006 Democratic nominee, had been the favorite.

The candidate told PolitickerMD.com that “balancing the budget” would be a type priority, saying her experience as a mayor would aide in that effort.

On energy, Dougherty said she would support the “construction of a biofuel refinery,” saying it would help solve the nation’s energy problems and dependence.

While Duck has to spend, Bartlett keeps cash close

Financially, Sixth District Rep. Roscoe Bartlett is far and away leading the pack in his bid for re-election.

The eight-term Republican took in $111,000 last year, with $60,000 from individual contributions, $49,000 from political action committees, and a few thousand dollars in expenditure refunds.

Likely Democratic nominee Andrew Duck raised well over $73,000 from almost $70,000 in individual contributions and $3,750 in donations from union PAC funds.

But while Bartlett barely opened his warchest, spending just $32,000, Duck’s comparatively competitive primary led him to spend more than twice that: almost $66,000.

As it stands now, Bartlett has $277,000 cash on hand, while Duck has only $10,500.
