James reacts to election defeat

High-tech developer Peter James (R-Germantown) spoke with PolitickerMD.com following his loss to Donna Edwards (D-Fort Washington) in today's special election in Maryland's 4th Congressional District.

"It looks like people aren't interested in politics," James said, referring to the extremely low turnout figures today.

The district, which encompasses portions of Montgomery and Prince George's Counties, reported low turnout throughout the day.

"When people don't come to vote-there's not much you can do," James explained, saying he was
"perplexed" by the lack of interest in the race. 

Edwards leads James by a margin of 65.77-31.78 percent in Montgomery County with a majority of precincts reporting.

In Prince George's County, with 71 of 110 precincts counted, Edwards leads with more than 92 percent of the vote.

Despite the loss, James said there was "light at the end of the tunnel," saying his loss by a margin slightly higher than 2-to-1 in Montgomery was a positive sign because Edwards "had a voter registration advantage of 5-to-1."

He also referred to Edwards' distinct monetary advantage.

Acknowledging that there was "more work to be done," James said, "We've got five months to go."

Edwards and James will once again square off in November.
