Residents of Maryland's 4th Congressional District will go to the polls tomorrow to elect a new member of Congress to replace former Rep. Al Wynn (D-Mitchellville), who resigned May 31. Activist Donna Edwards (D-Fort Washington) and high-tech developer Peter James (R-Germantown) are the nominees of their respective party's. Edwards is considered the favorite in the heavily Democratic 4th district, which encompasses portions of Montgomery and Prince George's Counties.
Despite their status as the clear frontrunner, Edwards' Communications Director Dan Weber told PolitickerMD.com today that the campaign is taking "nothing for granted."
Weber said the campaign has made a "conscious effort" to inform voters about the dangers of assumption, fearing that such a belief will lead to low turnout, and perhaps assist James.
"We've just been doing a lot of phone calls," Weber said, explaining that the Edwards team has been phone-banking each night for the past two to three weeks.
Of course, the first hurdle to overcome for both campaigns in the cycle was to inform residents of the special election. After Wynn announced his decision to resign early on March 27, Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) declared on April 17 that June 17 would be the date of the special election.
Low turnout is typical for most special elections, so Weber said the campaign sent out two pieces of mail to remind voters of the election date.
"Some people didn't even know about it," Weber said.
For James, the prospects of low turnout could be his only hope.
The underdog acknowledged that fact during an interview today with PolitickerMD.com.
"I'm sure low turnout will help," James said.
Despite trailing, James expressed confidence, saying his campaign "has reached a lot of voters."
His chief campaign issue has revolved around his contempt for what he calls "the private banking monopoly," saying it creates a "money as debt" system.
James said he hoped his message about the banks would encourage voters to support his candidacy, particularly with the "economy collapsing."
Meanwhile, Weber said he has been encouraged by the response from voters interested in the Edwards campaign.
"People are very excited to exercise their right to vote," Weber said.
Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., tomorrow.

There are two places online where voters in the June 17 special election can compare the candidates, including more than the two mentioned in this article. The League of Women Voters invited all the candidates to answer the same questions. The answers received from four candidates are published in the League's voters guides. Also, the same four candidates were invited by Access Montgomery to record a 4-minute video statement. The statements by the four candidates can be seen online -- and have been shown several times on Montgomery County cable channel 21.
I'm one of those candidates whose answers you can read in the voters guide and who you can see in the video. My name is Steve Schulin. I'm a registered write-in candidate -- votes for me on June 17 will be counted. If you'd like to see a God-fearin', liberty-lovin', sovereignty-conserving Representative in Congress, I ask for your vote on June 17.
