Senate Majority Whip Lisa Gladden (D-Baltimore) said Sen. Ulysses Currie (D-District Heights) exercised "an incredible amount of bad judgment" for allegedly failing to report to the State Ethics Commission that he had done consulting work for the Lanham-based company Shoppers Food and Pharmacy.
"The problem is--where there's smoke there's probably fire," Gladden told PolitickerMD.com Thursday.
That being said, Gladden also said she did not think the situation was as bad as "the newspapers are making it out to be."
Last week, federal authorities performed a raid on Currie's home, seizing file folders.
Since that time, very little information has surfaced about the case.
An attorney, Gladden said Currie "is innocent until proven guilty."
"As of today, he's innocent," Gladden added.
Gladden said she did not "know enough about white-collar crime" to speculate as to the possible legal ramifications that Currie may face if he is proven guilty, adding, "There would have to be a trial first."
A member of the Senate since 2003, Gladden has served as majority whip and as vice chair of the Judicial Proceedings Committee since 2007. Previously, she served in the House of Delegates from 1999-2003.

A defense attorney says it
A defense attorney says it is really not that bad. Gosh, where have we heard that before? When the FBI raids your house at 6am it means you are not really oh-so-sweet-and-innocent or it means you get to have a really fun lawsuit against the federal government. Since the FBI has tapered back a lot from days of Elian Gonzalez and Waco, they do not break in without damn good cause.
Gladden's are the first
Gladden's are the first comments I've read about the situation with Senator Currie that lean toward a perception that he may have done anything wrong. ALL other elected officials and persons that know Senator Currie have consistently said that he is of the highest integrity and moral character, and that he does not have a corrupt bone in his body.
I guess its true what tbwey say about Gladden, a evil opportunist to the bone.
