Neal Potter: Pictured as Montgomery Co. Executive in the early '90sThe Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee (MCDCC) issued a statement late Sunday expressing their "regrets at the passing of former County Executive and Councilmember Neal Potter," who died last Tuesday at the age of 93.
Potter served on the Montgomery County Council from 1970-1990, and served one-term as county executive from 1990-1994. In 1994, he returned to the council, where he served for another four years.
"He supported the party by the use of his and wife Marion's Chevy Chase residence for Democratic political events and financially as a member of the Plowman and Fisherman Clubs," the MCDCC statement read.
Retiring in 1998, Potter received the party's Lucille Maurer award for continued service by a former elected official in 2005.
During his time on the council, Potter authored state legislation on issues like farmland preservation and assessment. He was also instrumental in council decisions regarding taxation, transportation and development.
An active member of the NAACP, Common Cause, and Americans for Democratic Action, Potter was a leading founder of the United World Federalists, an organization created in support of world peace, now known as Citizens for Global Solutions.
A memorial service for the longtime public servant will be held at 1:00 p.m. on June 10 at the United Methodist Church in Chevy Chase.
