Kratovil says the economy is the No. 1 issue on the trail

Traveling across Maryland's 1st Congressional District, State's Attorney Frank Kratovil (D-Stevensville) listens as voters express their concerns on a daily basis along the campaign trail.

While residents may be weary and express skepticism on a variety of issues, Kratovil told PolitickerMD.com today that the sluggish economy carries the most weight on the minds of the voters he has talked to.

"People are very concerned," Kratovil said. "They see soaring gas prices and health care costs and are afraid they won't be able to afford to pay for their children's education."

Seeking to differentiate himself from his opponent, state Sen. Andy Harris (R-Cockeysville), Kratovil said, "The message (to the voters) is if you agree that the policies we currently have are effective and have benefited your lives then you should vote for (Harris). If you think we need to change those policies then you should vote for me."

Asked to elaborate, Kratovil claimed Harris "agrees almost entirely" with the policies of the Bush administration.

"(Harris) thinks tax cuts for the super-wealthy are good. He is in favor of tax cuts for corporations and big business."

"I think we need to give tax cuts to the middle class."

The Harris campaign has largely based their effort on a theme of "lower taxes and smaller government."

Polling data collected throughout the presidential primaries reveals that a majority of Americans consider the economy the most important issue facing the nation.

Kratovil said he expected that trend to continue throughout the year, saying he has heard voters describe to him that they are most concerned about their children.

"Families are really concerned that for the first time their children will not have the same opportunities that they did," Kratovil said.

Expect the economic debate to continue as the summer heats up and gas prices rise.

Frank is Great

My God...all this blathering. I've been at 3 events where Kratovil spoke over the last month. He is the best person to represent the First District in Congress. While you political chattering classes go on and on about nothing the rest of the world deals with the issues Frank is talking about. Go Frank!

And Just What Do You Define As Middle Class?

Jeff wrote:

As clear as I can tell, the tax cuts being proffered by the Democrats would be for individuals earning less than $80,000 per year - and that those tax cuts would amount to just around $500 per individual.

Neither of which is particularly apropos for small business.

The problem is, when your definition of middle-class is so skewed to be just above how one defines the poverty line (given how the Democrats defined "poverty" for their debates on children's health insurance), the overall net impact of your policy is going to be limited in all reality.

And it's actually _BECAUSE_ of Democratic policies that we have this $4.00 per gallon gas - regulations that have prevented the building of American refining capacity, for instance, and obstructionist policies that have prevented us from drilling for oil in places (and not just Alaska) that could seriously offset our dependence on foreign oil.

Thank you Polly for clearing that up?!?!

Polly,
Your comments about any and all Kratovil articles are so off mark it is incredible. You constantly refer to him as Kratovil/Pelosi/Hoyer/Van Hollen. Wow, when did he get so high and mighty. I didnt know he wrote agenda for Pelosi! Thank you polly for clearing that up. You say he doesnt know anything about tax policy and then you say he will have tax hikes. You say he doesnt understand economics and has no small business agenda. I think you should quit writing things you know nothing about. Clearly you dont know Mr. Kratovil. You further state his politics are a recipe for disaster. I think you should look at the alternative - Harris. His entire website is "BS" at best. Harris states on his website our nation is "the economic leader in the world". Wow-wee, how off base is that! Has that man not seen the value of the dollar lately compared to other world currencies! Harris states on his website that he has five children in school. His kids are/were home schooled! Harris is so against illegal immigration he has led MD down the path of maintaining the status quo on its antiquated immigration policies during his 9 years in our state senate. He even refers to the 9/11 hijakers as being illegals. Doesn't he know he was a state senator when some of those hijakers were issued MD Drivers licenses? Wow, can we have more of this effective leadership? Maybe he can come up with another brain storm like a summer gas tax vacation after the next session ends. Lets be proactive and forward thinking after all. Lets have another special session to address this. I am all for Kratovil after looking at Harris. Something is always better than nothing.

Middle Class tax relief will spur small business-based recovery

Unfortunately, Polly is allowing her lack of objectivity about Nancy Pelosi to cloud her good judgment. Polly, we are in a national economic crisis and you could be the next victim.

Now that the economy is in the tank and Corporate America is in hock to the Arabs and the Chinese to carry operations, we are back looking at revving the small business, middle class economic engine to restart this Recession-weary economy.

Kratovil should be applauded for promoting fiscal responsibility and a tried and true recovery policy: allow the middle class and small business owners (often one in the same) to hold on to more cash so they can invest in new infrastructure to support new ideas and markets. This reinvestment will drive American prosperty by increasing small business employment and spurring orders to corporate America for goods and services. When Small Business is building, employing and spending, Big Business enjoys greater dividends for shareholders and job security for American workers.

So small business owners

So small business owners (typically a business with less than 20 employees) who file as individuals would benefit from middle class tax cuts and NOT benefit from tax cuts for the super rich and Halliburton et. al.

Once again, middle class, working folks need to stop voting against their own economic self-interest and reject the era of Enron cronyism because the golden parachutes are a-flying and middle income, working folks are loosing their pensions.

This is NOT class warfare, this is reality after 7.5 years of the most lax regulation and what do we have to show for it? $4.00/gallon gas, a recession, etc.

Vote for Frank Kratovil [MD-1] because Andy Harris is would LOVE to serve out G.W.Bush's 3rd term.

...and Frank Kratovil Is Economically Ignorant

Kratovil doesn't know anything about tax policy - if he did, he wouldn't be repeating the Democratic mantra about "middle class tax cuts", which is essentially a meaningless phrase and defined incredibly narrowly, generally offered to incite class warfare.

The fact is, the engine of our economy is small business. 90% of American businesses have fewer than 20 employees, and the owners of these businesses generally file as individuals (as opposed to as corporate entities). These businesses create about 2/3 of all new jobs.

These are the people who would be hit first and most predominantly by a Kratovil/Pelosi/Hoyer/Van Hollen tax hike.

But the people who would be hit hardest are the people whose jobs would be lost as a result of the businesses that would shrink or be closed as a result of those tax hikes.

And this is not even to mention the impact of the other side of the Kratovil/Pelosi agenda: regulation. Like his fellow Democrats, Kratovil speaks with one hand about reducing taxes for a targeted segment of the economy, while calling for massive increases in the hidden tax of regulation. We've got a trillion dollar regulatory state in America, and according to the SBA these same small businesses pay nearly $8,000 per employee per year in direct regulatory costs.

Any tax cuts Kratovil might be in favor of would be offset by the massive regulatory state he's calling for (along with his fellow Democrats).

Kratovil doesn't understand economics. He has no small business agenda.

His politics are a recipe for disaster.
