Democratic congressional candidate Jennifer DoughertyFormer Frederick Mayor Jennifer Dougherty (D) has repeatedly expressed frustration with Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-Frederick) for his refusal to debate his challenger in Maryland's Sixth Congressional District.
The latest instance came last Wednesday night, when Dougherty and Independent candidate Gary Hoover participated in a question and answer forum in Jarrettsville; Bartlett was not present.
"This does not serve the voters very well," Dougherty told PolitickerMD.com. "At least give them the courtesy of showing up."
Lisa Wright, the congressman's press secretary, said "there was no way" Bartlett could have attended the debate last week because "there were votes that night" in Congress.
"He was hired by the voters to represent the Sixth District," Wright said. "He was doing the job he was elected to do."
Dougherty, however, claims that her press office contacted the Bartlett campaign approximately five times in a two-period after her Feb. 12 primary victory to discuss the possibility of a debate, only to be turned away.
"He has to face the voters," Dougherty said. "He has to explain why traffic congestion, gas prices, and job losses have gone through the roof under his watch."
Dougherty said she has already agreed to a debate on Oct. 23 sponsored by the Hagerstown-based Herald-Mail and the Hagerstown Chamber of Commerce. Wright would not say if the congressman would participate.
"It is Jennifer Dougherty's job to introduce herself to the voters, not Congressman Bartlett's," Wright said.
"It is not typical for candidates to schedule debates with their opponents," Wright added.
She said Bartlett would "consider" future participation, adding, "Congressman Bartlett's record is very well known to the voters."
Meanwhile, Dougherty said she would "clear my schedule" to debate the congressman.
"We'll keep at it," Dougherty said.

Should have
This is really simple to cure, they should have set the debate date on a day that there were no "votes" on capitol hill.
See how easy that was?

debate
In formal debating contest, there are rules enabling people to discuss and decide on differences, within a framework defining how they will interact. Informal debate is a common occurrence, but the quality and depth of a debate improves with knowledge and skill of its participants as debaters.
Jennifer not good for Congress
I don't like Jennifer. I am from Frederick and have known her for many years. Not only is she a closet lesbian (true), she is a self serving arrogant ass. She has gotten bored with her family providing the money for her to open businesses and has decided to "help" us poor people from Frederick. She was a terrible mayor that ruled like a queen, or king, sitting atop her throne.
Sorry Jennifer, this is the only election I'll vote Republican. Go Bartlett! Go Obama!!!!
It is shameful that he will
It is shameful that he will not answer the voters' questions about his policy stances. He should be voted out of office.
Roscoe is afraid to debate.
Roscoe is afraid to debate. That\'s clear. Anything else is a smoke screen. He\'s like one of those old kids\' toys that talk, the only thing missing from his head is the pull cord so he can repeat GOP talking points.
No spine in the old body of his. First thing Jen should do is get on the phone with Lisa, have Lisa whip out her PDA, go to the House schedule http://www.house.gov/house/House_Calendar.shtml and find a time that works for the ol\' potato head. If he won\'t play, every meeting that Ms. Dougherty goes to should open with \"I would have loved to have debated Mr. Bartlett here tonight, but he has been afraid to let the voters make an informed choice.\"
I wish Ms. D the best of luck in retiring the ol\' coot. He does nothing for his district. It is time to send him home.
