Kratovil says Harris would be ‘one of the most conservative people in Congress’

First District candidate Frank Kratovil meets with young Democrats in TowsonFirst District candidate Frank Kratovil meets with young Democrats in TowsonSpeaking before the Baltimore County Young Democrats in Towson this evening, congressional candidate and State's Attorney Frank Kratovil (D-Stevensville) said his opponent in Maryland's First Congressional District, state Sen. Andy Harris (R-Cockeysville), was "divisive" and would be "one of the most conservative people in Congress."

Kratovil said he expected the Harris campaign would continue to attempt to link him to Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) and U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

"He says I would vote straight party line because that's what he does," Kratovil said of Harris. "He votes straight party line."

"I'll vote the way I think is appropriate," Kratovil said.

The moderate Kratovil called the governor a friend, but said, "We don't agree on everything," specifically referring to illegal immigration.

As an example of his political moderation, Kratovil highlighted the fact that Gov. Bob Ehrlich (R) appointed him to the Maryland State Board of Victims Services, as a prosecutor.

He also claimed Harris and other "ultra conservative" Republicans were far too focused on tax issues, saying more attention needed to be spent on the war in Iraq, health care, the environment, and veterans relief.

"We need to make sure they get the resources they need when they get home," Kratovil said of returning war veterans.

On the environment, Kratovil said enthusiasm and "momentum" generated from Al Gore's award winning documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," signaled that it was an ideal time for action.

"(Harris) has one of the worst environmental voting records in the legislator," Kratovil said, referring to the senator's 2004 opposition to the so-called flush tax, which established the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Restoration Fund.

Kratovil was also highly critical of Harris' primary campaign victory over incumbent Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (R-Kennedyville), saying the large sum of money Harris raised from the conservative political action committee the Club For Growth, along with the portrayal of fetuses in anti-Gilchrest ads was intended to "divide people."

"Politics should be about bringing people together," Kratovil said. "(Harris) divides people."

"We need to recognize that there are differing views," Kratovil told the crowd. "The truth is usually somewhere in the middle."

Addressing the youthful audience, Kratovil reminded those present that he served as the president of the Young Democrats of Maryland from 1997 and 1998, where he was selected by Gov. Parris Glendening (D) to represent the United States on the American Council of Young Political Leaders' conference in Taiwan.

Kratovil, 39, referred to the tumultuous year of his birth, 1968, and said those lost during that year, namely Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr., inspired and led to his political involvement.

"We have a responsibility to one another," Kratovil said. "It isn't just about us."

He encouraged the young people present, largely composed of high school students, to get involved and volunteer for his campaign through sign waving, phone-banking, and other grassroots efforts.

The candidate said he enjoyed speaking to young people about politics because of their commitment to "justice" and lack of "cynicism."

Speaking with PolitickerMD.com at the conclusion of the event, Kratovil said he was confident that young people would support his campaign.

"You have to bring that hope and vision for the future," Kratovil said.

The candidate also said he expected the excitement generated from the presidential campaign would aide his campaign with young voters.

Del. Stephen Lafferty (D-Stoneleigh) and Circuit Court Judge Pat Stringer (D) were also present at the event.

Andy Harris credentials

To the anonymous poster, just to let you know, Andy Harris was named Chair of the Alcoholic Beverages Subcommittee. For three years he was the ONLY Republican to serve as the chair of a subcommittee and he was appointed to that position by Demcorat Senate President Mike Miller. After he announced he was running for Congress, Miller removed him from the Committee to replace him with Rich Colburn, another Republican.

Actually, the facts prove me out...

The CQ Politics Unity scores from last year actually butresses my point. Shuler, who you hold out as some sort of independent line crosser, still voted with the Democrat leadership 82.9% of the time. That means more than 8 times out of 10. (http://www.nytimes.com/cq/2007/06/06/cq_2847.html )

And Shuler doesn't have the Democratic Majority Leader of the Head of the D-Triple-C in his delegation.

Shuler's record was the best of the freshmen, incidentally. Altmire came in with 83.3%. Carney: 84.3%; Donnelly: 84.3%, etc.

Sure, Democratic leadership will give freshmen a symbolic "go against the grain" vote from time to time. But when those votes are needed most by leadership, they're going to be both expected and demanded. After all, that's why the DCCC fought so hard to win the majority - to actually win those tough votes.

I guess the question is, can we take your guarantee that Kratovil will vote with leadership better than 80% of the time to the bank? I think that makes a hell of a case for Andy Harris.

I sure as hell know that I'm not going to vote for someone who's going to vote with Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer better than 80% of the time.

There's really no proof of

There's really no proof of that statement at all. And, your logic that a freshman Democrat will always vote party line is flawed. The house leaders understand that if a Democrat in a moderate/conservative district votes liberal on all issues, they won't be elected and Congress will end up with a right wing nut.

That's why 12 out of the top 25 Democrats with the lowest party unity scores (determined by CQ Politics) were freshman Democrats and newly elected Democrats Heath Shuler, Jason Altmire, Christopher Carney, Joe Donnelly, and Brad Ellsworth were among the top 10 most likely to cross the aisle.

I think the first district can count on Kratovil being on that list as well in two years.

Who Were You Responding To?

Were you responding to me, or to Chris Meekins?

Try to stay on point here. Agnese can portray Kratovil as a "moderate". That doesn't make it so.

Kratovil can portray himself as a non-conservative maverick non-liberal Democrat. That doesn't make it so either.

Here's what I know: if you're a freshman Democrat from Maryland, you're going to toe the Democratic leadership line.

Furthermore, if the Democrats maintain their leadership in the House, _WHY_ would Frank Kratovil dare challenge the leadership, especially if he hopes to have any future as a member of the US House of Representatives?

The point is, in the end, Frank Kratovil can't be all things to all people in MD's 1st District.

And there's no way that Steny Hoyer and Chris Van Hollen are going to allow him to be the Democrat version of Wayne Gilchrest.

Do you even bother to read

Do you even bother to read the article or do you just see the word "Kratovil" and immediately write copy a campaign talking point, even if it doesn't relate at all to what is being discussed?

I'm guessing not because if you were you would see Mr. Agnese said

"The moderate Kratovil called the governor a friend, but said, "We don't agree on everything," specifically referring to illegal immigration.

As an example of his political moderation, Kratovil highlighted the fact that Gov. Bob Ehrlich (R) appointed him to the Maryland State Board of Victims Services, as a prosecutor."

I'm pretty sure Andy Harris can't claim to be so respected by his opposition party that he is appointed to various boards.

And as for reaching across the aisle, I'm not sure if voting for bills to lessen the effect of them (like making attacks on the homeless a hate crime) will really resonate as true bipartisanship

I Thought Kratovil Was Running As a Conservative?

Does he want it both ways? I thought the whole point of Frank Kratovil's candidacy was that he was a conservative democrat who would truly represent the values of Maryland's eastern shore.

But really, either Frank Kratovil is being affirmatively disingenuous regarding how he's going to vote, or he'll be the most naive freshman rube to ever enter the halls of Congress. He'll vote the way _HE_ thinks is appropriate? Not with Steny Hoyer and Chris Van Hollen as part of his delegation. Not if he wants D-triple-C support in this election or future ones.

No, he'll vote the way leadership wants him to. Pseudo-conservative Frank Kratovil will be true to his PG-county roots and can show his lefty beliefs for what they are.

Andy conservative? Nah.

Andy conservative? Nah. He's just nasty. Some funny things go on in the brain when around them knock-out drugs.

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1200/is_19_166/ai_n7072752

At least that would help explain some of his positions on the issues.

Now that Grandpa Munster's gas tax summer fiesta fizzled, will Andy still push for a special session? Or was "his" idea just a brief flash of light, like the Pikesville bomber?

Andy, Andy, so much material, so little time.
