Lafferty considering state Senate run if Brochin steps aside

Del. Stephen LaffertyDel. Stephen Lafferty (D-Stoneleigh) told PolitickerMD.com that he would look at the prospects of running for state Senate if Sen. James Brochin (D-Towson) declines to seek re-election in 2010. Brochin has expressed interest in running for the position of county executive in Baltimore County, but has yet to announce any formal plans.

"One always has to keep their options open," Lafferty said, adding that the current buzz surrounding a possible Senate run is "speculation" and "premature."

Lafferty, a member of the Environmental Matters Committee, has served in the House of Delegates since 2007 and says he intends to run for re-election in 2010. But, he cautioned: "Two years in politics is a long time."

"I'd have to really consult a lot of people," including family and friends, Lafferty said. "I would also ask myself if that was the best thing for the people in the district.

The delegate dismissed the idea of a potential primary run against Brochin if the senator seeks re-election: "I have not talked to anyone about running against Sen. Brochin."

Lafferty also serves as the deputy director for the department of planning and zoning in Howard County.

His colleague in the 42nd district, Del. Bill Frank (R), told PolitickerMD.com, "It's way too early to start thinking about 2010."

"I'm focused on helping John McCain get elected," Frank said. "I'll start thinking about my own political plans once the presidential race has concluded."

Del. Susan L.M. Aumann (R-Baltimore), also of the 42nd district, could not be reached for comment.
