Edwards joins anti-war activists in Washington

Donna Edwards (D-Fort Washington), the presumptive future congresswoman in Maryland’s Fourth Congressional District, joined anti-war activists on a march to the White House in Washington, D.C. yesterday, as protesters marked the five year anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq.

In remarks provided by her communications director, Dan Weber, Edwards called for an end to the war while addressing the crowd.

“This administration and its Congressional allies continue to follow a failed strategy, continue to reject a new approach to Iraq, and continue to openly defy the will of the American people,” Edwards said.

“It has been 5 years; 3,990 honorable servicemen and women are dead; over 29,400 are injured; and as many as 1 million Iraqis are dead; it is time to end this war,” she said.

Edwards said the war could be ended, but “only with leaders who are willing to engage all possible military, diplomatic, and economic strategies that many others and I believe will bring an end to the war while protecting American interests at home and abroad.”

“We must have the political will and courage to end this war, bring our troops home and care for them and their families, and deploy the diplomatic and economic tools to leave Iraq more responsibly than we entered,” Edwards said.
