In a shocking daylight attempted robbery on May 10, a man was fatally stabbed at a Catonsville gas station while en route to taking his pregnant wife to the hospital to give birth.
WJZ/AP reports that Rep. Elijah Cummings pulled into the same gas station just seconds after the assailant fled, cradling the bleeding man in his arms until the ambulance arrived.
Carlos Santay-Carillo died at the hospital a few hours later, shortly before his son, Carlos, Jr., was born.
"If I had been here just 25 seconds earlier, I'm sure I would have been right where he was," Cummings told WJZ.
Santay-Carillo, a Guatamalen immigrant, spoke little or no English, so Cummings immediately phoned a Spanish-speaking friend, asking "How do you say, 'stay down and it's going to be alright'? I kept saying over and over again, 'stay down, it's going to be alright.'"
"That's a horrible way for his wife to experience Mother's Day," Cummings said of the man's wife, Claudia. "On the one hand, she experiences the birth of her child. On the other, she loses the father of her child."
In the Hispanic culture, Mother's Day is celebrated on May 10.
