As the ‘Phantom 50’ seems to have been a myth all along, but Mark Halperin is speculating Obama – and maybe even Clinton – will announce several new superdelegate supporters today.
A buzz circulated after Clinton's victories this week that the AFL-CIO – of which Maryland superdelegate John Sweeney is president – might endorse her, though that turned out to be just rumor.
Whoever is endorsing today, we know two who won’t be.
Yesterday, we traded e-mails with state Democratic Vice Chair Lauren Dugas Glover who made her neutrality plain, “As unpledged superdelegates, we must be diligent in our deliberations.”
“I remain an uncommitted at this time and don't know when I will make a decision.”
“It is a great thing for the party to have two strong candidates. The ultimate goal is to win the White House in November,” she said.
On what else she is taking into consideration, Dugas Glover added, “I am evaluating from both camps what works best in the long term for the State of Maryland.”
We also contacted uncommitted DNC Member and Del. Heather Mizeur, who had no comment on the matter at this time.
But we speculate that the decision is a little different for Mizeur, as she is unlike the unmovable members of the delegation and could actually be held accountable by her constituents.
Obama handily won Montgomery County – which she represents – 55% to Clinton’s 43%. For a first-termer in a region full of ambitious Democrats to take a position, however reasonable, against the votes of her district could cause serious trouble for her in ’10.
So Mizeur remains uncommitted for now, but for how long? We’ll see.
