Earmark reformer or queen?

How can a governor say she “championed” earmark “reforms” when she just boasted about requesting 85 separate federal earmarks during her two years in office?

Apparently, Gov. Sarah Palin is like many other Republicans who feel the need to make false claims about their past. John McCain still claims to be a maverick. He was, once. But, that was before he reversed himself on taxes, torture and more to win a GOP nomination.

Now that they’ve lost power congressional Republicans now claim they’ve always hated earmarks. Yet, before they lost control of Congress their annual $20 billion plus pork bills used to make even George Bush blush and that’s not easy to do.

Bob Ehrlich still claims he held the line on taxes and spending when the record shows he raised taxes by over $3 billion and spending by over 30 percent in four years?

Say it over and over again and at the very least your fans – new and old – will not only believe it, they’ll repeat your talking points to the letter no matter how inaccurate.

So, when Gov. Sarah Palin’s was introduced to a national audience she stood next to George Bush’s huggin’ buddy, John McCain, and said this with a straight and convincing face:

“I’ve championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. In, fact, I told Congress thanks but no thanks on that Bridge to Nowhere.”

And when she fed GOP Delegates the red meat they craved on Wednesday night she repeated it almost word for word.

“I… championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress 'thanks, but no thanks,' for that Bridge to Nowhere.”

I am sure Gov. Palin just forgot about the op-ed she wrote six months ago in which she bragged about the earmarks she sought. Reform was the furthest thing from her mind.

“This year (2008), we have requested 31 earmarks, down from 54 in 2007. Of these, 27 involve continuing or previous appropriations and four are new requests. The total dollar amount of these requests has been reduced from approximately $550 million in the previous year to just less than $200 million.” [Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, 3.5.2008]

Gov. Palin practically built an entire career around earmarks. She hired a lobbyist – a former Ted Stevens staffer – to help her get tens of millions in earmarks for Wasilla, Alaska when she was mayor.

Later, she not only championed the “Bridge to Nowhere” (before it became a national laughingstock), she used it as a campaign message two years ago when she ran for governor – much to the delight of the now indicted Sen. Ted Stevens, no doubt.

“The Alaska governor campaigned in 2006 on a build-the-bridge platform, telling Ketchikan residents she felt their pain when politicians called them "nowhere." They're still feeling pain today in Ketchikan, over Palin's subsequent decision to use the bridge funds for other projects – and over the timing of her announcement, which they say came in a pre-dawn press release that seemed aimed at national news deadlines.

According to the same locally written story (The folks who supposedly know her record best.) it wasn’t until McCain slammed the “Bridge to Nowhere” in 2007 that Gov. Palin issued a press release reversing her stance on the bridge, not the money. She kept the cash and spent it elsewhere.

That’s not reform by a real reformer. That’s a pinball bouncing around George Bush’s GOP message machine.

But, give her some credit. It takes a lot of gall to try a con job of this magnitude the very first time you meet the voters in the lower 48.

Come to think of it, she has a lot more in common with George Bush than we thought.

No, David. It is not a case of "he said". It's a case of "You said". So, in the interest of integrity, I'd like to separate hard, verifiable fact from spin and biased opinion. If you want to practice Michael Olesker style journalism (i.e. he got himself fired for writing that he'd witnessed something he'd actually obtained from a second party's statements), then your credibility will continue to be zero and your "shill factor" for your democrat patrons the only thing that defines you and your OPINION pieces. Just don't claim/pretend that these pieces contain factual information.

Verifiable citation according to real journalistic standards is all I ask. And you've done nothing but, in your own words, "deflect". Facts matter, not the gymnastic pretzel logic that must've gotten you the job and admiration of your handlers in Annapolis' Nanny-state house.

From an Administration that just gave 700 billion to bankers, generally, 30 Billion in guarantees to Chase, 30 Billion to Fannie and Freddie specifically?

Apparently entitlements include Wall Street bankers, like children who make bad decisions and dad comes to bail you out with $2k per taxpayer per year.

YEs those banks would have failed and it would have been painful but on the other hand it would have opened up opportunities for thousands of others to step in and fill the need for those services. Main Street bankers would have been happy to help out Lehman's clients.

I sure hope those republicans who are affronted will vote third party in a thoughtful manner. there IS a conservative in the race but he's not from today's GOP. Bob Barr is the only true conservative and has twice the experience on the Hill that Palin does (none). A PTA mom as president of the senate? Shouldnt you at least go to law school? Shouldnt you at least get a degree in something from somewhere? She can parrot Bushisms with her Alaska oil money but it aint hard to balance a budget when you have deep pockets - aks Paris Hilton.

How typical of you to imply, or even outright call Gov. Ehrlich a liar. And yet, still No attribute to bolster your claim. Why is that such a hard thing for you to do? Hmmmm. Who has credibility? Facts are troubling to some

Facts are troubling to some folks, whether it's Gov. Palin or Ehrlich whose fans feel the need to protect by distraction or deflection.

Until someone actually posits something that contradicts what's been written (And claiming Ehrlich left a surplus is not a fact just because Ehrlich says so - it's a lie. He had the money spent and his administration proudly demanded it be spent.) then the piece stands.

Blooms are coming off all sorts of roses these days. I am just glad PolitickerMD got there early.

The American military pounds Iraq with Artillary, bombs, and the like, destroying large sections of cities, and infra-structures, then Halliburton comes in to rebuild. Halliburton and Halliburton associated companies have raked in ten’s of billions.

Obama is just like the BIG HALIBURTAN. Haliburton has contracted to build detention centers in the U.S. similiar to the one in Quantanammo Bay, Cuba. Halliburton does nothing to earn the Two Dollars for each meal an American Serviceman in Iraq eats.

Halliburton was scheduled to take control of the Dubai Ports in The United Arab Emiirate. The deal was canceled when Bush was unable to affect the transfer of the American Ports.

Yet another cyber tantrum from the pouting, spoiled children of entitlement government. Maybe the government could run health care as well as Massachusetts has. Maybe as well as Hawaii is. Both sinking ships. Who's paying for "fixing" the best system in the world? "Other people" is always the way for the children who "have Dad's credit card". Your policies would give us health care on a par with public housing - another federal success. Perhaps you could hitch a ride w/ Michael Moore to Cuba, where the health care is primo, numero uno. Then there'd be one outbound patient to allow room for one more inbound patient. You know, those people from the rest of the free world that routinely come here when their lives depend on the best care.

Second. It sounds like you are in Az. and should know that like here, under Owe-Malley, things are worse. You should/would know that Arizona isn't run by a U.S. Senator (McCain). Liberal Governor Janet Napolitano runs the state. Her failed tax/spend policies of bigger government, larger social programs that increase welfare dependencies and active non-enforcement of immigration laws are a hallmark of her politics going back to her U.S. Attorney days. I have firsthand Dep't. of Justice knowledge. This all bears an eerie resemblance to Maryland. Go team, go!

Lastly. You prove my point about liberals and their irrational, visceral and ad hominem responses to Gov. Palin. Her state IS better off with her policies and political philosophies in place. She actually runs a government. Hmmmmm. I assume that since you couldn't get up to Minneapolis/St. Paul to welcome her, this is your own Code Pink style cyber-equivalent of throwing trash cans through windows, spitting at police, rudely shouting-down opponents and yelling F-you into cameras. I just love how the Republicans are Championing themselves on 1984 speak- That all of our worries are the fault of the "Democratic Congress."

Need we remind those whiners that any action the congress takes often has a lagging effect between the vote and the impact on society? We're now seeing the effects of the bankruptcy bill and the other mismanagement that occurred under the congress that had been, until two years ago, in Republican hands.

Even today, the Republicans have filibustered, derailed and outright stopped efforts by the Democrats to reform Washington. How can they have the cajones to blame it on us when they are the ones who have created this mess?

Oh yeah, we can't have government healthcare because it will not work. OK, lets take congress' healthcare away, lets take socialized medicine out of the VA and contract it out to private business. THE GOVERNMENT CAN RUN HEALTHCARE FOLKS!!!!

McCain, as noted above, has done things for Arizona--- gotten us millions in earmarks (I was for it before I was against it). BUT, he has done nothing else for Arizona- that is why we rank 50th in the nation for education, 49th in the nation for families living in poverty and nothing for the immigration mess that he helped create and now taxes our economy.

Yeah folks, come to Arizona to see how 'wonderful' it is living under John McCain and his do nothing friends in the Republican controlled Arizona government. Then ask yourself:Can America really afford his rule in Washington--- I don't think so....

David, David, David. Still wetting yourself over the "competition"? Pretty insecure about your own message and candidates, huh? Building your party up by tearing the other side down is the kind of thing hollow shells resort to. When will you speak of (or spin) the Democrat accomplishments that produce positive growth for the citizenry? I'm talking personal responsibility for one's choices and actions and standing on your own. It's the old bromide of giving a hungry person a fish vs. teaching them to fish. Dependency is as dependency does. The donkey morphs daily into the Nanny (state) goat.

You actually make Mrs. Palin's reformer point. She "bragged" about a 43& REDUCTION in total earmarks coupled with an approximately 63% total $$ REDUCTION. Of that figure, 87% was due to ongoing projects. That equates to real reform. Math isn't a priority in earning liberal arts degrees, so I'll assume that's why you missed the point.

As to Gov. Ehrlich's record, could you state the attribute for your "raised TAXES by $3 billion" statement? Or is it semantics and spin? What happened to the huge surplus his governance created out of an inherited deficit? And the beefed-up rainy day fund he left Owe-Malley? How long did it take Marty & co. to spend/raid that? How did he handle looming obligations that the Glendenning era legislature passed? Mrs. Palin GOVERNED by making hard choices in spending. Yes, the boondoggle $$ didn't get doled out to the projects that weren't wise or a priority. The Federal monies received were actually not earmarks anymore, but new grants to the general highway budget. Pain comes from responsible choices when bloated budgets get reduced by reform minded executives. Priorities come first. Unlike Owe-Malley's current tactic of threats to priorities in Md.(Police, Fire, Education, Entrenched Hand-outs) if slots don't come along to fill the bottomless trough in Annapolis.

Just days following Gov. Palin's selection to run with Senator John McCain it would seem that so many issues from cuts in special ed. funding, the true story behind the use and sale (not on e-Bay)of the private jet, the scandal over the construction of a hockey ring, the scandal of censorship and a librarian's firing, and list goes on her supports keep saying people are attacking her family. This is her record and not her family.
