Friends and neighbors, colleagues and activists – people I know who know what I do - want to know the answer before it happens. My life-long Republican father can’t resist the question. He asked me over the weekend, again.
“So, who is Barack Obama going to pick for Vice President?”
I gave him the same answer I gave the last time he asked.
Of course, just about everyone has their own answer, a calculated reasoning, a strategy behind the “who and why” THEY think the pick should be. All of them make sense in some way. All of them use conventional presidential campaign “wisdom” – the traditional criteria candidates supposedly consider in choosing a running mate - for their logic. Obviously, most of them will be wrong as will a number of pundits and experts who speak with such authority yet have so little.
VP buzz is a great game to play.
Almost none of the folks I talk with care about John McCain’s pick. Such is the peril of relying on a self-selected focus group for determining what the public is thinking. Democrats, Republicans and independents who have given up on the Republican Party as the party of integrity, trustworthiness and principle just don’t care what those guys do anymore, even if John McCain is a man whose service to our nation is worthy of praise and respect. And, he is.
But, Sen. McCain continues to defy his own ad campaign; turning his back on the “maverick” image that he hopes will continue to fool voters while flip-flopping the very “maverick” positions he once held as he panders to his party’s base. Much of that base still views him as nothing more than their “hold-your-nose” candidate, at best.
McCain hopes to paper over that problem by continuously repeating a new campaign slogan that is nothing more than a generic appeal to patriotism. It’s a wonderful way to live your life. It’s an honorable attitude for a citizen to have in the greatest nation on the face of the planet. Besides, “A third Bush term” just doesn’t connect despite the fact that John McCain told us we could trust Bush with our nation.
Now even McCain uses Bush as little more than a punch line in those campaign ads.
How can he hug George Bush - and his cash cows - one second and declare Bush’s presidency to be a failed joke on the American people the next, while keeping a straight face? That’s no maverick.
While polls show McCain remains very competitive in this race, his “strong support” numbers remain half of Obama’s. Not a good trend. Can he solidify that with his VP choice? We’ll see.
Will McCain promise the voters he’ll serve just one term in office, making his VP choice an automatic wedge issue within his own party? We’ll see.
Is that a gimmick his campaign thinks it needs to compensate for inherent weaknesses? We’ll see.
Now for the hard part. What do I think about this important moment for Barack Obama in what has been an absolutely brilliant campaign? Unlike McCain, Sen. Obama will choose a running mate from a position of strength.
Beyond that, I think I don’t need to be saying what I think. I have no crystal ball. If I did I would keep it to myself, anyway.
That job belongs to one person and one person only and he doesn’t need another guess from the sidelines to help him make it. He’s already made history defying conventional wisdom and I trust him.
And that’s what I told my father.

Kumbaya (Part 2)
Now that EVERYONE is "together", when will the DVD of Hollywood's latest feel good movie (Dem-ver Color-Rad-O?)be available? Do I need to send $$$ to the DNC or will Blockbuster carry it? LOL ;-)
Those kumbaya Dem.'s will
Those kumbaya Dem.'s will certainly show their unity this week w/ the (18 million vote strong) Bill/Hill gang stomping their feet and turning blue, and the "Re-create '68" antagonists trying to bring their brand of anarchy to the party in an oh-so-trendy protest-fest. Only problem is, the inclusives led by Nancy pants Pelosi have set aside designated chain link fence CAGES to literally contain these 1st amendment free speechers (it worked well for 'em in Boston '04!). "Smile for the cameras everyone!" It's a disfunctional family reunion portrait.
You may have to shake your pom-poms a little harder, before the end of the week Dr. A.
On deck nightly this week: Change, Peace, Change, Hope, Change, Unity, Change, Newness, Change, Shiny things, Racist war criminals vote against us, Change. ;-}
Shorter Paulson
"Elephant bad, donkey good."
Exactly
You made Paulson's point exactly. McCain is running on the false message that he is the same "maverick" he was back in 2000.
Back then he opposed Bush's tax give away for the rich - now he supports it.
McCain use to vote with the president less than 80% of the time - now he votes with the president over 95% of the time.
McCain use to call the leaders of the religious right "agents of intolerance" - now he is claiming to be their candidate.
And the list goes on and on and on...
When you vote this November the choice is clear. If you are happy with how we are viewed in the world, happy with gas prices, and happy with the economy...if you want to see America stay on its current path - vote for McCain, Harris, and Bartlett.
If you think America can do better and want change - Vote for Obama, Kratovil, and Dougherty.
Barack Obama is good because
Barack Obama is good because he is not like George Bush and John McCain is bad because he is like George Bush. Wait, didn't John McCain run AGAINST George Bush?
David Paulson must have written off Frank Kratovil if he is writing about McCain and Obama. If Maryland goes for McCain then McCain has won the nation in a landslide.
Money
"And how about Obama's ability to pull the good ol' Mitt Romney, spending WAY more money than anyone else and it not doing any good?"
You are right that Obama does seem to have unlimited financial resources like Romney did...the difference is that Romney had to self fund while Obama's money has come from over 2 million average Americans who are ready for change.
All the excitement is with the Obama campaign and this November he will make sure we do not have a third Bush term as he is elected the next president of the United States (not to mention the increased Democratic majorities in the House and Senate he will have to work with).
HA!
Brilliant campaign? Being outperformed by a generic Democrat by 8.6% is the sign of a brilliant campaign? Something tells me that when a significant chunk of the population says "A Democrat? Great! Oh that guy? I don't think so." it's a sign his campaign is somewhat less than of even decent quality, let alone brilliant.
And how about Obama's ability to pull the good ol' Mitt Romney, spending WAY more money than anyone else and it not doing any good? In July Obama spent $56 million and lost 3 points on McCain. BRILLIANT!
Maybe you should tell your father he needs to have more intelligent sperm.
