Decided, Dem Chair Cryor won’t let himself endorse

Michael CryorMichael CryorStill tracking Barack Obama’s ‘Phantom 50’ superdelegates, PolitickerMD.com went to state Democratic Chair Michael Cryor to see if he would be making an endorsement anytime soon.

“No, I am not one of the 50,” Cryor e-mailed us from his Blackberry this morning.

Also asking whether the large margin Obama accrued in the state would have any impact on his decision, we noted yesterday’s Obama endorsement from Vermont Democratic Chair Ian Carelton.

Similar to Maryland, Obama won a lopsided victory in the Green Mountain State, 59% to 39%.

But Cryor cited the nationwide deadlock as a reason for state chairs to stay publicly neutral, saying, “the Party is vulnerable to the uncertainty of how we achieve finality on the nominee.”

“While, I am not undecided about my choice, I strongly believe that chairs should remain neutral and free to broker compliance from both camps, pushing back on supporters of either candidate when necessary.”

“Thus, I believe a chair who declares at this time runs the risk of surrendering that value.”

It’s not an enviable position that Cryor is in, as every Democrat with a pulse wants to get into the fight for his or her candidate.

Yet, as he says, “calm, undeclared heads must be present to serve as honest brokers for a positive outcome.”

Something tells us that when he says he has no plans to endorse, he really means it.

And so goes another unknown superdelegate into August.
