Voters should "dump" Congressional Democrats who don't show up to debates, according to the Maryland Republican Party.
The GOP has taken U.S. Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Fort Washington) and U.S. Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Kensington) to task for failing to debate their Republican opponents.
"It is the height of arrogance to refuse to show up to debates sponsored by the League of Women Voters, as Chris Van Hollen has done," Jim Pelura, chair of the state GOP, said in a statement. "[Republican Congressional candidate] Steve Hudson is a veteran, doctor, and has a record of working to improve his community. Voters should have the opportunity to compare the two."
Van Hollen did not attend a debate in October after being required to attend an impromptu Congressional caucus meeting on an emergency financial program.
"Donna Edwards criticized Rep. Al Wynn for refusing to debate her in the Democratic primary, but is now turning around and refusing to debate [Republican Congressional candidate] Peter James," Pelura added.
Both Van Hollen and Edwards were contacted for comment but have not responded.

Maryland Independent Party seeks to empower new generation
Hi Linda -
We've all seen change. I think there's plenty of opportunity for a God-fearing, liberty-loving, sovereignty-conserving party here in Maryland, including Montgomery and Prince George's. Rep. Edwards seems gung-ho "pro-choice", for example. I think her position denying that babies have the right to life is akin to the position of those who denied that blacks were endowed by our Creator with the same unalienable rights as the rest of us human beings. This issue alone could change the political face of our counties, states and nation, and quickly. Donna Edwards calls Planned Parenthood one of her "Champions of Change". Well, I think this approach has worked so far only because the pro-life movement has not been effective in communicating. Our new party is organizing with an eye on empowering folks in each precinct to apply America's principles -- like the God-given right-to-life -- with intelligence and enthusiasm. You ask about chances in hell. Well dear, I don't think we're in hell, although with the Democratic and Republican parties failing in leadership for so long, I can sure empathize with your confusion.
My motto today is "Don't vote for the white man. Don't vote for the black man. Vote for the right man." That Alan Keyes' ancestors came to Maryland as slaves hundreds of years ago, and this year he's on the ballot for President in states with many millions of voters, like California and Florida, is pretty neat. I remember in 2000, Dr. Keyes went down to the Alabama GOP 'beauty contest' and by the end of the day, through the strength of his ideas and power of his oratory (and the fact that frontrunners didn't bother to attend) had won the endorsement of this statewide gathering of Alabama Republicans. You bet I think we can win here in MD4 and MD8. Will we do so this year with Dr. Keyes as a write-in for President and me as a write-in for Congress? LOL -- I hope you'll forward a copy of this message to everybody on your block and ask all your friends to do the same, and those pose the question to the voters yourself.
Best wishes to all of good will,
MARYLAND INDEPENDENT PARTY

Wow...
Wow. I'm SO HAPPY the state GOP spends its time attacking two Democrat Congressmen who are going to win handily, instead of going after Frank Kratovil in the competitive First District.
Jim Pelura is clueless. The worst GOP chairman in 20 years.
btw Mr. Schulin
....Edwards and Van Hollen do have their seats locked in...but do you think you have shot in hell either? Not in this state you don't.
Hopeless...
It's a hopeless attempt... coulda shoulda woulda... in the special election, but DIDN'T! Edwards and Van Hollen have their seats locked up and there's not a thing the GOP can do about it.
DEMs and GOPs are Both Bad for the USA
Voters should take BOTH the DEMs and the GOPs to the cleaners in November. It's clear that both parties have a Culture of Corruption. They merely trade power back and forth to give the appearance of a choice for the people. The Democrat-Republican-Media monopoly needs to be broken apart. The only way that will happen is for people to vote third party.
I highly recommend Steve Schulin in the 4th District of Maryland.

DEMS are Bad for the USA
Voters should take DEMs to the cleaners in 2008 like they did to GOP in 2006. Now Mahoney the cheater joins the ranks of corrupt Democrats. Here's the list of corrupt DEMs – John Edwards – cheater and trial lawyer - Jim McGreevey - Former NJ GOV, Elliott Spitzer - former NY Gov, Acevado - Puerto Rico Gov, Kwame Kilpatrick - Detroit Mayor, Jefferson - LA congressman, Chris Dodd – CT Sen – (favorable loan from Wells Fargo) – Laura Richardson (CA-D) – defaulted on at least 3 CA homes and got Wash Mutual to reverse the sale after the fact. Sheila Dixon (D) – Scandalous Baltimore Mayor and the list goes on and on… Obama should be proud. Where's all the media reports claiming a Culture of Corruption in Democratic Party? Hmmm? Seems like we had endless stories in 2006 when it was GOP turn. The media is truly disgraceful.
MD-4 candidate ready to debate at the drop of a hat
The GOP had a golden opportunity to win the 4th district Congressional seat in the special election in June. Seventeen thousand or so votes would have won. Where was the GOP support for their candidate? I registered as a Republican when I moved here as a young married man in the 1980s. But I cannot support John McCain for President, nor even stay silent about his reprehensible record on issues that are important to me. Obama is every bit as unacceptable to me too. Both seem to be clearly disastrous choices in terms of preserving our national sovereignty and individual liberty. I support Alan Keyes' decision to leave the GOP and continue to run as an independent. He will be on the ballot for millions of voters across the nation, but here in Maryland, you'll have to write-in his name.
One of the things Dr. Keyes has emphasized is that those who think that these are extraordinary times have an obligation to decide whether they are satisfied participating as normal this year. I urge all of good will to check out the new party being started here in Maryland -- Maryland Independent Party. We need 10,000 petition signers to get candidates on the ballot in 2010. Will you help by printing and mailing in the form available at http://www.MarylandIndependentParty.org ?
Like-minded folks in other states have joined with us in starting a new national party too -- America's Independent Party. We're already the third largest national political party in terms of number of registered voters. And we're not satisfied with being #3.
There's never been a presidential candidate who's garnered tens of millions of write-in votes. But this election continues to be extraordinary. Tens of millions of voters might be getting more steamed with every passing day about the recent massive financial "rescue" law. Obama and McCain both voted for it. I suspect Keyes would have vetoed the bill if he were President. I know that I would have voted against it if I were in Congress. And by the way, I too am a write-in candidate. I'm the one to whom the subject line refers -- ready to debate at the drop of a hat. Not only would I have opposed the government taking ownership stake in the financial industry, and the saddling of our children with yet more government debt to do it, but I would have offered an alternative: abolish the federal income tax. This would have a much better effect on investor confidence, and rightly so. We would see an economic boom the likes of which have never before been seen. Investors would be lining up to put their money to work in the USA. The current 'crisis' would soon be but a minor blip in our history.
But there's many other issues which could cause millions, and even tens of millions, to decide that neither Obama or McCain are worthy of their vote:
* Border control - Seven years after 9/11, and the Republicans and Democrats still haven't found the leadership to control who enters our nation. This is a travesty, as it would be even if the only consideration was national security against the jihadists. Who will those who believe -- like I do -- in controlling who enters our nation, and bountiful freedom within, vote for this year? McCain and Obama have shown what they want. And what they want is quite different from what I want. Alan Keyes represents my views on this much better than Soros-supported McCain and the Soros-supported Obama.
* CO2-climate - McCain and Obama, and Donna Edwards too, support mandatory reductions in CO2 emissions which will require wrenching changes in our society. My industry is nuclear power. I own the nuclear.com domain. I've spent literally thousands of hours reading the science journals and discussing with scientists. This is an incredibly broad field, and I have found that most scientists involved in climate science are so necessarily specialized in their knowledge that they do not have a good understanding of many of the exaggerations and lies that get bandied about on this subject every day. This issue is huge in terms of our liberties as US citizens and in terms of our wallets too. If you're not ready to hand the keys to our economy and our lifestyles to the globalists, the only way not to waste your vote this year is to vote for Alan Keyes (and me, too).
* Gun rights - Obama is rightfully known as a gun-grabber. You've surely heard his comments in San Francisco about those who cling to their religion and their guns. Well, did you know that McCain earned a grade of "F" in recent years from Gun Owners of America? Keyes gets an "A" from them, and I believe they are correct about all of the above. Who will those who understand the role of the Second Amendment vote for this year?
* Federal income tax system - I mentioned this earlier, highlighting the economic benefits of abolishing this tax system. But that's not the biggest advantage that will flow from repealing the Sixteenth Amendment. The income tax is inimical to our liberty in many ways. If you didn't get a chance to see Dr. Keyes discuss this in the Republican primary debates in 2000, I urge you to visit the Keyes video archives -- there's a link at http://www.MarylandIndependentParty.org -- the sight of this descendant of slaves describing the enslaving nature of the income tax is a powerful thing.
* Pro-life - Dr Keyes represents my view, and that of the founders of our nation, that all humans are endowed by our Creator with unalienable rights, including the right to life. Obama, Biden, McCain and Palin are all pro-choice. They turn their collective backs on the innocent human beings who are allowed to be killed in the womb, and in the case of Obama, even when the little human survives outside the womb after an attempted abortion. I know there are tens of millions of voters who understand the damage that legalized abortion does to our society. If these people alone decided that the lesser of two evils is not nearly good enough, then Alan Keyes might be the next President of the United States.
Very truly,
MARYLAND INDEPENDENT PARTY
