Harris pushing Kratovil on crisis 'solved' comments, Kratovil says he was misquoted

Republican Andy Harris's campaign is still criticizing Democrat Frank Kratovil for a quote that appeared in The Daily Times in which Kratovil said the nation's financial crisis was solved, but Kratovil is now saying that the quote itself was reported incorrectly.

"We solved the crisis, but we don't always do something to solve the issue," Kratovil was quoted as saying in the original version of an Oct. 7 The Daily Times story.

The controversy began when Harris attacked that statement.

"Mr. Kratovil. Just pick up The Daily Times," Harris said during a debate at Cecil College. "It's in quotes. It says quote 'we solved the crisis.' Now which is it? What you said yesterday in Salisbury or what you're saying today in Cecil College? I don't get it."

The Kratovil campaign argued that the story was wrong and that it had already been corrected.

The Kratovil camp insisted that the candidate, who was campaigning with Sen. Barbara Mikulski when he made the original comments, was not speaking towards the financial crisis directly. The campaign released an audio clip of the conversation as evidence that the quote in The Daily Times was wrong.

"And as I mentioned in my talk, you know, in this country we often times deal with a crisis. We solve the crisis, but we don't always deal with the long-term issues that lead to the crisis," Kratovil said in the audio clip obtained by PolitickerMD.com.

Harris' team, however, says they're not surprised Kratovil is "back peddling" and say they still have a copy of the original story in print.

"Kratovil said last Monday he supported the taxpayer funded Wall-Street bailout and then said the crisis is solved," Chris Meekins, Harris's campaign manager, wrote in an email to PolitickerMD.com. "Kratovil's wrong, the bailout did not solve anything."

Kratovil's press secretary, Kevin Lawlor, said he sees no reason for the Kratovil campaign to engage in a senseless argument.

"It's pointless to argue," Lawlor told PolitickerMD.com. "It was corrected in the newspaper."

Why context matters

The actual quote was "And as I mentioned in my talk, you know, in this country we often times deal with a crisis. We solve the crisis, but we don't always deal with the long-term issues that lead to the crisis."

The context was how America deals with a crisis, not directly about the bailout. The Times not only misquoted "We solveD the crisis," but it also took the quote entirely out of context. They printed a retraction and apology. Hopefully the reporter got his a@@ handed to him.

If that's what Mr. Kratovil

If that's what Mr. Kratovil truly meant to say, then he would have used the word 'crises' not crisis. Regardless of what he meant, it is what he said. As someone who is running for Congress, you must be aware and sensitive to syntax. He is a lawyer for god's sake!

The Salisbury Daily Times Is A Lousy Newspaper

If you want the scoop on how bad that newspaper (Daily Times) is, just read the blog by the biggest Harris booster on the Eastern Shore, Joe Albero, at sbynews.com

No excuse Kratovil didn't say it

The quote is "We solved the crisis" the tape that the daily times acknowledges is of the interview has Frank saying "We solve the crisis..." Because he goes on to say that he is concerned about what decisions will be made in Washington because of a historical trend. He said that we solve the crisis and then never address the issues that got us there in the first place. Now if that's not a text book misquote I don't know what is.

Misquoted? Now that's a new

Misquoted? Now that's a new excuse.

Harris' Campaign

is grasping at straws.

And I agree that the headline for this article is incorrect. NOT Kratovil says he was misquoted -- BUT Kratovil was misquoted.

The recorded interview proves that Kratovil WAS MISQUOTED.

Kratovil WAS MISQUOTED IN THE ORIGINAL ARTICLE in The Daily Times. Daniel Reiter should absolutely not say Kratovil says he was misquoted. Kratovil was taped and the tape proves that the paper screwed up. The Daily Times printed a retraction and an apologized to Kratovil. Daniel Reiter's headline should read "KRATOVIL WAS MISQUOTED AND IT WAS PROVEN BY AUDIO TAPE. THE DAILY TIMES PRINTED A RETRACTION AND APOLOGIZED.

This is what was on the audio tape of the interview with The Daily Times:

"And as I mentioned in my talk, you know, in this country we often times deal with a crisis. We solve the crisis, but we don't always deal with the long-term issues that lead to the crisis," Kratovil said in the audio clip obtained by PolitickerMD.com.
