Ron Paul: Politicker.com PhotoCOLLEGE PARK -- U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) dropped into Maryland Thursday to show his support for five of Maryland's Republican Congressional candidates. The event -- designed to raise cash for the candidates' campaigns -- was held at the Comcast Center at the University of Maryland in College Park.
Paul, who made an unsuccessful bid for president in 2008, says a lot of enthusiasm resulted from the campaign.
To continue the momentum, Paul established the Campaign for Liberty PAC. Endorsement standards vary, but candidates generally need to share his philosophy.
"It's not that complicated, you know, they'd have to agree with me on personal liberties and privacy," Paul told PolitickerMD.com.
More specifically, opposition to the Patriot Act, a desire to withdraw troops from Iraq, and an intense interest in monetary policy make a good a fit, according to Paul.
"And that seems to be the real eye opener right now because the way the markets are acting," said Paul, who was against the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 - the bailout legislation passed by Congress last week. "They have no right to steal from you to give to a bunch of rich bankers."
Richard Matthews, the Republican candidate eyeing Maryland's 2nd District seat, said he couldn't have been more honored to receive an endorsement from Paul.
"Ron Paul's the reason I'm involved in politics," Matthews told PolitickerMD.com. Matthews's former campaign manager, who was killed in a motorcycle accident last month, was a key player in organizing Thursday's event.
"He did all the initial prep work," said Matthews of 29-year-old Patrick Citroni.
With the current financial crisis, Paul has a more respected voice than ever, according to Matthews, who's printing new campaign signs that read "Richard 'No Bailouts' Matthews."
Running for Maryland's 7th District seat is Republican Mike Hargadon, who was enthused about the endorsement as well.
"I'm all about it man, this is the best thing," Hargadon told PolitickerMD.com. "Any time you can say five out of eight of Maryland's Congressional candidates are agreeing with Ron Paul - that's an amazing statement."
Collins Bailey, the Republican challenging House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Mechanicsville), says he believes people will vote principle over party this election cycle.
"I see a lot of encouragement to believe that this election will be different," Bailey told PolitickerMD.com. "Congress has a 9 percent approval rating and that's lower than the British had during the time of the signing of the Declaration of Independence."
Republican Peter James of the 4th District said he received an endorsement from Paul during the primary. But with the newfound Campaign for Liberty, James is getting financial backing.
"These are I think the true Patriots," James told PolitickerMD.com.
Citroni's death dominated Thursday's conversation, but the bailout package came at a close second. Republican Steve Hudson, who's running for Maryland's 8th District seat, had strong words about the measure.
"I've heard that Congress may have been pressured into this bailout either by the administration or others," said Hudson. "I don't know if that happened or not but if it did people need to be held accountable, people need to go to federal prison."
Admission to the fundraiser was $5 for students, $25 for general admission and $150 for VIP. Proceeds were split amongst the five Congressional candidates.

No Endorsement for Andy. Andy must have called him a Liberal.
It speaks fathoms that Ron Paul did not endorse Andy Harris. Andy must have called Ron Paul a Liberal. Everyone is a Liberal except Andy in Andy's own mind. Even Andy's own will not support such an extremest who is incapable of thinking any beliefs besides his own could be legitimate.
I would have like to see some coverage of the big issue
The press just doesn't want to cover the big issue. The roll of the private banking cartel in the collapse of the monetary system.

I was rather surprised by the CD 8 endorsement also. I'll leave it at that. It was not blanket. All 8 candidates did not receive it.
Still Confused
I've always known that the candidates from CD 2,4, 5 and 7 were RP candidates, but since when is CD8? Sure he opposed the wall street bailout...but upon further review, he also favored trampling on the Constitution through support of FISA, and looks like he does not support noninterventionalism as he supports the war too...Could you clarify how that makes him a RP candidate? It must've just been a blanket endorsement regardless of individual candidate's policies
Let me clarify
RP initially endorsed the 4 MD candidates in CDs 2 Matthews, 4 James, 5 Bailey, 7 Hargadon, not all on the same day. CD 8's came later. Initially, RP told us to look at 3rd parties for a choice of President, then later endorsed Chuck Baldwin, Constitution Party. We wouldn't have to have a Constitution Party if the Reps & Dems followed it. Yes, Mr. Baldwin is on the ballot in MD, and many more states. If these candidates are to your liking & 1 of them isn't in your District, Mr. Bailey is challenging S. Hoyer, FYI, the Majority Leader. An endorsement has not been given to all MD Reps, since there are 8 of them.
You Have the Power
Now that you know the truth, with the election less than a month away. You have the power to begin to fix the problem. Do not think for one moment that you know less than the people who have caused this problem.

endorsement
I thought Ron Paul endorsed all the third party candidates over a month ago? What is so special about Baldwin?
5 Candidates?
I only count four. I was in D.C last year and there were 5 or 6 Ron Paul candidates running for Congress in Maryland. I met one of them at a Ron Paul Meetup in Alexandria. It would be better to support local congressionsl races since the Presidential race is a lost cause. I am still making my vote count for Ron Paul to send a message to the power elite.
Are there really?
Are there really 5 "Ron Paul" candidates, or did he just give a blanket endorsement to all the Republicans that showed up?
Chuck Baldwin
It starting to strike me as a rather tepid endorsement. I haven't heard a thing since then....
I wish those guys would all just swallow their wounded pride, then kiss and make up. Sheesh.
Ron Paul Endorsement
Not to mention the Ron Paul endorsment of Chuck Baldwin for president
