EASTON -- Republican Anne Kimberly hosted her first fundraiser for a Democrat on Friday. It was for Congressional candidate Frank Kratovil (D-Stevensville).

Kimberly's first husband was former U.S. Rep. Rogers Morton (R-Talbot County), who represented Maryland's 1st Congressional District in the 1960s and early 1970s.

She said Kratovil's stump speech "was very nice" and free of sound bites.

"Andy Harris totally turned me off during the primary when he was running against Gilchrest," said Kimberly in an interview with PolitickerMD.com. "I think Gilchrest is one of the very best members of Congress I've ever known."

U.S. Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (R-Stevensville), who was defeated by state Sen. Andy Harris (R-Cockeysville) in the February primary, endorsed Kratovil over the summer.

Kimberly called Gilchrest a moderate and said her party decided to defeat him simply because he wasn't voting in line with President Bush.

She says Harris made false claims and "dreadful" remarks about Gilchrest during the primary. "And that just turned me off completely," she said.

Kimberly felt Kratovil, who has been branded himself as a moderate, would be able to reach out to "quite a lot" of Republicans, but wasn't sure if it would be enough.

Kratovil, the Queen Anne's County state's Attorney, and Harris are currently competing for Maryland's 1st Congressional District seat. The 1st District includes 12 of the 23 counties in the state, which encompasses all of the Eastern Shore and portions of Harford, Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties.

The Kratovil-Harris race is ranked the 51st most competitive U.S. House race in the nation on Politicker.com's Pindell ReportPoliticker.com's Managing Editor James Pindell lists the race as "Leans Republican."

Over 50 people attended the fundraiser which had no specific ticket price, according to the Kratovil campaign.

In addition to representing Maryland's 1st District, Morton served as chair of the Republican National Committee for about three years, secretary of the interior for four years and secretary of commerce for two years in the Nixon and Ford administrations. He died in 1979 at age 65.

Thank Wayne Gilchrest for

Thank Wayne Gilchrest for seeing the rest of the light and endorsing Barack Obama and Frank Kratovil. I say the rest of the light because Wayne was good on the environment before. He has come around full swing (finally, might I add) to join our fight for Democratic values!

Frank Kratovil will be a coureageous champion of the poor, underprivliged youth and he will join with Barack Obama to enact our progressive priorities--healthcare for all, change in Washington, and forthright representation.

Do not criticize Frank for saying he will go to Washington to be an Ally of Governor Martin O'Malley. Frank is just saying he has a good working relationship and friendship with Governor O'Malley that will enable him to help advance our progressive goals in Washington.

Vote our virtues, vote our progressive ideals, vote Barack Obama, Frank Kratovil in 08!

Right move by a classy lady

This grand dame of the Grand Old Party was courageous and showed great conviction to recognize the honorable and honest way to run a campaign; she refuses to bow to misplaced party loyalties simply to appease party leadership, and for that she is to be commended.

It was an ugly primary season primarily carried out by noxious Andy Harris campaigning filled with vile and heinous mis-truths all bent on destroying one of the most genuinely "good guys" in Washington--and to think we had the honor to have him serve the great Free State of Maryland. If the 1st District does turn from red to blue, blame rests solely on Dr. Harris' shoulders and those who assisted him in his scorched-earth primary campaign. The First District had no choice in the primary with the unfortunate late entry of Mr. Pipkin and the unfunded Judge Banks when juxtaposed to the acrid campaining of the Harris' machine--all to unseat a quality individual who was not lock-step with the Republican Party of the State.

At our nation's founding, people like Congressman Gilchrest were to admired and held in higher regard for not being in sync with colonial government. We should always remember that our freedom is based on a Revolution against the status quo and we should thank Wayne Gilchrest (and now Ms. Kimberly) for fighting the good fight.
