MD-8 challengers unload on Van Hollen, despite his absence

ROCKVILLE -- Just because he was absent, doesn't mean Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D) wasn't the 600-pound gorilla in the room at Thursday's debate. Van Hollen, required to attend an impromptu caucus meeting on an emergency financial program, sent legislative director Bill Parsons in his stead. And the challengers, all eager to give the incumbent a piece of their mind, were forced to settle for the stand-in.

The 8th Congressional District hopefuls included Green Party member Gordon Clark, Republican Steve Hudson and Democrats Deborah Vollmer and Lih Young - both write-in candidates.

"Chris Van Hollen advocates for policies that don't meet our needs and many instances I believe take us in the exact opposite direction that we need to go," said Clark.

Clark then accused Van Hollen of being too close to the corporations and industries that fund his campaign - a talking point he used frequently.

"Are you better off than you were six years ago when Chris Van Hollen came into office?" said Hudson. "I think the answer is no."

Hudson called the current Congress one of the worst "in the history of government."

Vollmer had a few issues with Van Hollen as well, but her main beef was with the war in Iraq.

"I don't think Mr. Van Hollen's a hawk, but he's got a mixed record," she said. "We need a leader, we need a leader who will vote against all funding for the war in Iraq and will bring our troops home."

Young spent most of the evening explaining her philosophies and praising America's strengths. Her message, she said, was "challenge and change."

Parson vouched for Van Hollen's six year record, noting he's served the Kensington Democrat for five years.

"He's spent every day trying to provide responsive, responsible, properly prioritized, forward looking representation for this district he serves," Parsons said.

Candidates would often speak heatedly against Van Hollen, but Parsons rarely flinched. He sat relaxed and calm - rarely looking at or responding to other candidates. Parsons spent his time detailing Van Hollen's positions and policies.

During closing remarks, however, Parsons took his allotted two minutes to counter certain claims - many of which were made by Clark.

But Clark took his two minutes to turn it up a notch and the crowd responded energetically.

"I would be happy to rebut Mr. Van Hollen if Mr. Van Hollen ever appears to come into public," said Clark.

The debate was sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Montgomery County and Friends of the Rockville Library. It will be rebroadcast over the weekend on Access Montgomery channels 19 and 21.

Well done LWV and CCAN!

Excellent candidate forum, broadcast by CCAN and facilitated by the League of Women Voters! I would have to say that Gordon Clark is the rep that best represents my interests and he put on a "darn good show". Well done Gordon!

Vote Gordon Clark

Gordon Clark stole the show at the debate. It would be great if he and Mr. Van Hollen could do a radio debate before the election, because they seem to be the main contest. For me what's most important is sending a message to elected officials that their job is at stake if they fail to do right by their constituents, which applies to far too many of them. As Clark seems the most likely candidate to send that message, and well qualified, please vote for him.

Did anyone actually listen to....

Did anyone actually listen to the words of these speakers? First of all, I have to say that Congressman Van Hollen made an excellent choice in having Mr. Parsons represent him in his absence at the forum. Mr. Parsons was very knowledgeable on the issues facing our district. Also, Mr. Clark of the Green Party represented himself very well. Mr. Hudson however, I feel is a bit out of touch with most 8th district voters – in fact, did anyone catch that he actually referenced Dick Armey?? No one likes Dick Armey, even republicans wanted to run him out of town! Secondly, his quote on energy, “we can’t fly a plane on a pineapple yet” spoke wonders. Lastly, much can be said of Debbie Vollmer who did well in voicing her opposition to the war, and Ms. Li as well, both long time community activists.

Neither major party has the solutions

Democrats talk a good talk but fail to deliver. We are faced with multiple crises including global warming, peak oil, rising food prices--none of which the two major parties have serious solutions for.

Voting lock step for Van Hollen simply because he is nearly guaranteed to win the district is wasting your vote.

Send a message to congress that they need to address the problems that face us now, and not at the last possible minute like they did with the mortgage crisis.

Van holland is done

Parsons was a worthless tool.. Clark is passionate but too extreme... Hudson makes sense and has credibility... Vollmer, Young are well meaning but will always be seen as radical community activists. Either way it is obvious, people are upset with the self appointed prince of district 8 and want his head!

There are few sure things in

There are few sure things in life, like death and taxes. One thing to add to that list is that Chris Van Hollen will be reelected to serve another term.

Anyone who says differently has been smoking something funny.

you are uninformed

Van Hollen is a party hack and our country is suffering at the hands of corrupt politicians and CEOs. Van Hollen is in trouble. He just voted for the bailout instead of listening to the calls of his constituents. People are starting to wake up! It's about time!

Van Hollen

Chris Van Hollen is doing a fine job as our Congressman, so I am confused about how these candidates claim Mr. Van Hollen isn't "meeting our needs."

Glad to know that Chris stayed at work last night instead of bothering with this mess.
