Sergio Vitale helped state Sen. Andy Harris's congressional campaign raise over $30,000 in a single night.
Vitale hosted a hybrid fundraiser at his private home in West Ocean City on Monday along with the chair of Perdue Farms - Jim Perdue. Guest's who paid over $1,000 a ticket to a fundraiser at Purdue's home were able to attend a VIP reception at Vitale's residence.
"Marylanders desperately need Andy's leadership in Congress. Andy is a tough fighter who will represent our interests in Congress - because he's one of us," said Vitale in a statement.
Vitale is one of three potential Republicans who would fill Harris's seat in the Senate should he move to the U.S. House. Vitale has been pointing to his fundraising abilities as a way to portray himself as the most viable candidate in the unofficial race for the 7th District seat.
If Harris defeats State's Attorney Frank Kratovil (D-Stevensville) for the 1st Congressional District seat, the state Senate hopefuls would have to be approved by the respective counties' central committees in the district to fill the empty slot. In addition to Vitale (R-Glen Arm), former Del. Al Redmer (R-Baltimore County) and Del. J.B. Jennings (R) have their sights on the seat.
Redmer said he appreciates Vitale's efforts in helping Harris get elected to Congress. "Congratulations to Sergio," he told PolitickerMD.com.
Redmer's campaign theme has differed from Vitale. He has based his unofficial campaign on getting Harris elected to the Senate in the first place. Though, he has also pointed to a strong legislative and business background as a plus.
Jennings, who has been backed by Del. Pat McDonough (R-Middle River) - a former candidate for the seat, is currently in basic training for the U.S. Air Force and could not be reached for comment.
