Harris, Romney reveal new campaign slogan

Mitt RomneyMitt RomneyBALTIMORE - Republican Andy Harris' campaign changed gears on Friday with a new slogan.

The campaign's new motto - "Freedom, Opportunity, Change" - was revealed at the campaign's Friday fundraiser featuring former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-Mass.).

"People are simply tired of the way business is being done in Washington," Harris told reporters before his luncheon at the Center Club. "Sixteen months ago almost to the day I decided to run for Congress to change the way business is done in Washington."

Standing by Harris' side was Romney, whose record as governor received praise from the state Senator from Cockeysville.

"Governor Romney obviously had to work across party lines. As a Republican from Massachusetts he understands what that means to Maryland," said Harris.

Romney said the only way to make progress on the local and federal level was to be willing to find common ground.

"That doesn't mean you compromise your principles," said the former 2008 presidential contender. "It means that you find ways to work with the principles of the opposition party to do what's best for the people."

Harris agreed. "Working across party lines does not mean compromising your basic principles," he said.

Included in the campaign's new slogan was the buzzword "change."

"People want to see a difference in the way business is done in Washington," Harris campaign manager Chris Meekins told PolitickerMD.com.

Meekins said endorsements from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Mechanicsville), Gov. Martin O'Malley (D-Baltimore) and U.S. Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (R) prove Kratovil's "kind of more of the same."

Harris and Romney did more than talk about reaching across party lines. The Harris campaign invited former Gov. Marvin Mandel (D-Baltimore) to the reception. Mandel has been a supporter of Harris for a few years according to Meekins.

Kratovil (D-Stevensville) and Harris (R-Cockeysville) are currently competing for Maryland's 1st Congressional District seat. The 1st District includes 12 of the 23 counties in the state, which encompasses all of the Eastern Shore and portions of Harford, Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties.

The Kratovil-Harris race is ranked the 51st most competitive U.S. House race in the nation on Politicker.com's Pindell ReportPoliticker.com Managing Editor James Pindell lists the race as "Leans Republican."

Tickets to the fundraiser were priced at $1,000 a plate and $75,000 was added to the campaign's war chest as a result of the event, according to Meekins.

The conservative Eagle Forum

The conservative Eagle Forum PAC has endorsed state senator Andy Harris in his bid to unseat nominal Republican Congressman Wayne Gilchrest. From the press release: A nationally recognized conservative organization, Eagle Forum PAC, has endorsed Andy Harris in his bid to unseat incumbent Wayne Gilchrest. Eagle Forum PAC supports candidates who are committed to a conservative philosophy of limited government, national sovereignty, and traditional values. In the endorsement, Eagle Forum Founder and President, Phyllis Schlafly said, "Andy's articulate conservative voice in the Maryland General Assembly shows he's the right man to represent the first district. From his support for the unborn to limiting the size of government to ensuring that illegal aliens do not receive driver's licenses, Andy knows the issues facing America and is willing to address them head on," "I am proud to receive the endorsement of this respected conservative organization," said Andy Harris. "I share Eagle Forum's commitment to limited government, support for the unborn, and defense of our national sovereignty." "This endorsement shows that on February 12, 2008 conservatives have one choice in the first district - Andy Harris," said Chris Meekins, Campaign Manager for Andy Harris for Congress. This is the second endorsement of the Harris campaign by a major conservative organization. The degree to which this influences the course of the campaign is arguable, however, it does underscore the point that Senator Harris's campaign manager Chris Meekins has been making for weeks. Movement conservatives have exactly one choice in the primary: Andy Harris. _________________ Submited by : Libros Gratis

Responses to Austin and Shoreman

Austin- Half of these "names" on here are the same guy who posts over and over again. He pretends to be "independent" to attempt to persuade voters, completely unaware that anyone who reads these blogs are either firmly in someone's camp, or informed enough to not be persuaded by some guy with too much time.

Shoreman- Everyone knows Ehrlich dislikes Gilchrest because he opposed him on slots and this was just a way to get back. It wasn't like he was breaking a long-standing relationship.

Why do you support him if you dont like him

Harris wonder and BaltCoobserver both make comments that make me wonder why they would vote for someone they dont like? This does not make sense to me. BCO, Why do you keep putting Kratovil in the same box as O'Malley? Personally I love Kratovil and cant stand OMalley. Is it merely party? Not all Dems are Martin and Martin is certainly not representative of every dem. Harris wonder, you make me wonder why you want him to win. Everything you say is negative. Why not give a decent man a shot at victory- vote Kratovil for Congress

That post post makes

That post post makes absolutely no sense. Dr. Harris had more support from Republican elected officials than Gilchrest, the 18 year incumbent did! Even Bob Ehrlih endorsed him rather early. You have to be well liked by your colleagues for them to go out on a limb like that.

Harris' future

I have also felt that the more people who meet Harris, the worse he will do. He comes off as being so arrogant. The best thing he could do is rely on mail and tv to get his message out. With his lack of charisma, the fewer voters he sees in person the better. I want him to win, but he is a mess personally. It is so obvious tht he only cares about himself. No GOP elected officials really like him. They just say what hey have to in public. harris also has a staff of immature imbosiles working for him. They are already threatening other politicians. Imagine how they will acy once Harris is elected.

haris will win,but will only last a couple of terms before he is taken out in a primary. He hs future scandal written all over him. When all the other politicians in your own party hate you, it is only a matter of time.

Reason for new slogan?

Anyone wonder my Harris might feel the need for a new slogan? Could it be that things aren't going so well and he needs a change of direction? I can't think of any other logical reason...

Sorry JL - I am registered

Sorry JL - I am registered unaffiliated who supports Andy and can't stand O'Malley. Good try though.

With your rude and obnoxious comments, why does Kratovil need enemies when he has friends like you. You should try to make a point without flinging personal insults.

And that is precisely why he

And that is precisely why he came to support Andy Harris. Andy will change the way we do business in Washington. Frank Krato'malley is more of the same...

That can only make sense to the twisted mind of a Republican.

"Yes, we republicans have really screwed the pooch, so let's send the worst we have to offer to Washington to see how he can really do some damage."

Plenty of time for Andy to screw it up. In fact, I should have a meet and greet for him, because the more people I know who have met him, the more people I know who will be voting for Kratovil.

And by the way, you left out Pelosi. You must be having a bad day.

"Even Romney knows it's the Republicans who broke Washington...." - JL

And Andy Harris is far from one with the tools to fix it.

Proofing, continued

"Standing by Harris' side was Romney, who's record as governor received praise from the state Senator from Cockeysville."

Spell check also won't tell you that "whose" is the correct word to use here.

Do you guys edit these

Do you guys edit these things? Spell check is not a substitute.

I doubt the slogan was "reveled at the campaign's Friday fundraiser" it was probably "revealed.

Any while the board of education may not want to "you compromise your principals" Romney probably said he did not want to compromise "principles".

If you want to be a pseudo-news blog rather than just some guys posting stuff you need to do it right.
