Del. Sue Hecht (D-Frederick County)DENVER - State Del. C. Sue Hecht (D-Frederick County) says 6th District congressional candidate Jennifer Dougherty (D-Frederick) can win in November, but it’s going to be an uphill battle.
“I’ve known Jennifer for many years and she’s a fighter and she’s very smart. People are wanting a change and I think this is a time where all the stars can aline,” Hecht told PolitickerMD.com during a reception for U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Mechanicsville).
Hecht said she recognized the challenges Dougherty faces.
“It’s the most conservative most difficult district for a Democrat to run in in Maryland,” she said. “It’s absolutely an uphill battle for any Democrat. It’s not just Jennifer.”
Hecht did say there was opportunity.
“She has a lot of name recognition especially in areas of Frederick where most the votes will come from for progressive candidates,” said Hecht, before taking some shots at Dougherty’s opponent, U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-Frederick).
“People want a change and Bartlett promised only to run once and he’s run -- this is his eighth term I guess."
Bartlett supported term limits when he first ran for Congress in 1992. He has voted in favor of term limits several times, but feels it would be unfair to the 6th Congressional District if he imposed term limits on himself while others gain seniority. Bartlett is now running for his ninth term.
Hecht then went after Bartlett's failure to properly disclose $1 million in earnings he made from property.
"He’s got some memory problems about property he owns and forgot to put that into some of the filings that he’s supposed to do,” she said of Bartlett.
Dougherty is currently running against Bartlett for Maryland’s 6th Congressional District seat.
