Pelosi calls herself ‘first Marylander' House Speaker
By Danny Reiter, PolitickerMD.com ReporterDENVER – U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) returned to her Maryland roots Wednesday morning, calling herself the “first woman, first Marylander” Speaker of the House.
Pelosi made the remarks during a Maryland delegation reception hosted by Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon at the Renaissance Denver Hotel.
Pelosi grew up in Baltimore and her father, Thomas D’Alesandro, Jr., was a 5-term member of Congress and legendary mayor. Her brother, Thomas III, also served as Baltimore's mayor.
During her speech, Pelosi touched on Michelle Obama’s Monday night address at the Democratic National Convention.
“You talk about east Baltimore. You talk about working families. Couldn’t each of you just substituted your name or the names of your friends for the story she told,” Pelosi told the Maryland delegation and their guests.
She called Michelle Obama’s Monday night address a “remarkable speech. It was every person’s speech in America.”
“And then, wasn’t Hillary Clinton powerful?” Pelosi asked the crowd, before praising Clinton’s “strong endorsement of Barack Obama."
Pelosi has served as speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives since 2007 and has represented California’s 8th Congressional District since 1987.
