Harris: Kratovil 'will vote with the liberal Washington leadership'

State Sen. Andy Harris (R-Cockeysville) is trying to paint his Democratic opponent as just another liberal – charging that Frank Kratovil "wants to be an ally of Governor O'Malley's in Washington."

The Harris campaign made the comments in reference to a fundraiser scheduled for Tuesday evening. Gov. Martin O'Malley (D-Baltimore) and other top Democratic state officials are listed as hosts on the invitation.

"Kratovil wants to represent O'Malley's values in Washington, Andy Harris wants to represent the values of the first district," said Harris Campaign Manager Chris Meekins in a statement. "These liberals are supporting Frank Kratovil because they know when he gets to Washington, he will vote with the liberal Washington leadership to raise taxes, increase wasteful spending, and ban off-shore drilling which would alleviate our dependence on foreign oil."

Marketing himself as a moderate Democrat has been a key talking point for Kratovil. The State's Attorney has stressed his conservative stance on gun control issues throughout the campaign and has called illegal immigration one of his "pet peeves." Last week, Kratovil received an endorsement from the Blue Dog coalition - a conservative Democratic Congressional caucus.

Kratovil Campaign Manager Tim McCann doesn't seem to be worried about the Harris campaign's remarks.

"If Andy Harris is this worked up over a fundraiser taking place less than 10 miles from his own front door, then he must be apoplectic when he looks at his own fundraising reports," wrote McCann in an email to PolitickerMD.com. "Unlike Frank Kratovil, who is proud to be drawing his financial support from Democrats and Republicans alike right here in Maryland, Andy Harris has already received over one million dollars of financial support from a single out-of-state special interest group."

Kratovil and Harris are currently competing for Maryland's 1st Congressional District seat. The 1st District includes 12 of the 24 counties in the state, which encompasses all of the Eastern Shore and portions of Harford, Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties. Politicker.com's The Pindell Report, calls the race Republican leaning and ranks it the 51st most competitive congressional race in the nation.

Mr. Meekins

"he will vote with the liberal Washington leadership to raise taxes, increase wasteful spending, and ban off-shore drilling which would alleviate our dependence on foreign oil."

-The "Liberal" tax plan as proposed by your "Liberal" Washington leaders would only increase your tax burden if your average yearly income is over $600,000. I seriously doubt that the majority of the First District falls into this category. And by the way, does Mr. Meekins expect us to just rack up debt forever? Who gets to be the lucky ones that pay?

-Increase wasteful spending... right. Like pouring our American dollars into things like homeland transportation and telecommunications infrastructure is more "wasteful" than spending $600 Billion in America's Futile Fall from Morality that is the Iraq war. Wasteful spending indeed, oh and all that money we’ve been sending to rebuild Iraq? Check out Iraq’s fat surplus. Check out the paper trail for services and contractors we have paid to “rebuild” Iraq…oops, what paper trail? I’m sorry, we misplaced your billions, and I’m sorry but it’s all gone.

-Banning offshore drilling.... uh-huh, you can't 'ban" something if it is already "banned". And who banned it? I’ll give you a hint; it wasn’t the "Liberals." In addition the drilling issue is still on the table for most liberals, the debate arrives when people think that by simply drilling the problem will be solved. Drilling is not a long term solution to our foreign oil dependence, it is shortsighted at best. Most "Liberals" would be agreeable to offshore drilling if the rest of the country was simultaneously considering a long term plan that included provisions to move away from petroleum dependence altogether, not just foreign. It takes more than drilling, and “Liberals” are ready to make the drilling concession as soon as the “Conservatives” are ready to concede a long term plan.

Hot button issues. Gets the blood going knowing how many people vote on one or two insignificant things, and how they fail to see that their overall choices in leadership have led us to the current State of the Union. Blame the congress all you want (I hear plenty of “you see what happened when the Dems took control in 06?”) but a RECORD filibuster by the Republicans in the Senate (60 votes needed to pass anything, and the Dems, while holding a numerical majority, do not have 60 votes) is the problem. Hard to get things done when the Republican Senate votes to recognize Mother’s Day before re-voting to vote against it moments later – just to keep their filibuster going while being able to say “look I –voted- for it!” Pathetic.

I’m not listening to the people who brought shame and poverty to this country, and I don’t care how these same people scream that the consequences may come in the form of a mushroom cloud. If you want your government to continue to utilize terrorist tactics to make decisions, hey, that’s your prerogative.

That's Right Bull Horns...

If you love Dick Cheney, who now has a home in Talbot County, you'll love Andy Harris.

Just like if you love Martin O'Malley, Steny Hoyer, and Nancy Pelosi, you'll love Frank Kratovil.

Because, BH, no matter how you slice it, the residents of the 1st CD have a hell of a lot more beliefs in common with Dick Cheney than they do with Nancy Pelosi and Martin O'Malley.

And, frankly, isn't Frank Kratovil running as someone whose beliefs are a lot more in line with Dick Cheney's than they are with Nancy Pelosi's?

Harris own voting record

Harris spends a lot of time speculating on how Kratovil will vote.
But it is not speculation when you review Harris' own voting record.
If you notice, he doesn't spend much time talking about it, because it is so anti-environment and anti-education, he doesn't want the people of the 1st district to know how far right he is. IF YOU LIKE DICK CHANEY, U WILL LOVE ANDY HARRIS.

Apoplectic when he looks at

Apoplectic when he looks at his own fundraising??? Hasn't Harris outraised Kratovil THE ENTIRE RACE?

Frank Kratovil/Johnson Lineir Sentence Structure

Kratovil: Independent, Eastern Shore, moderate
JL: Chrissy, Repuglican, right wing

Johnson - I hate to tell

Johnson - I hate to tell you, but you will need "Repuglicans" to vote for Kratovil in order for him to be victorious. When you say such harsh things, it makes your guy look bad.

On the other topic, I do not believe Harris is wrong to link Kratovil and O'Malley. He recently had a statewide approval rating of 33%. I doubt it is any higher in the 1st Congressional District. This makes complete politial sense. If Kratovil has evidence to the contrary he should present it to the voters.

Frank Kratovil will not

Frank Kratovil will not repute Martin O'Malley, but claims he is an independent. If you don't agree with his politics then get rid of his endorsement! It was nice to see young faces from the Harris campaign going door to door.

Could any of the three

Could any of the three infamous Repuglicans listed below every break out of the lies they like to tell?

Doesn't Andy have anything

Doesn't Andy have anything else to say? Calling everyone liberal is not a campaign strategy, it is a sign that there is no substance to the Harris candidacy.

08/18/08 2:45 pm

Uh Oh

It seems the Harris campaign is sounding more and more nervous as this election goes on.
