Jennifer Dougherty, who is running for Congress in Maryland’s 6th District, is asking her opponent to “face me or the public.”
Dougherty’s call came after U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-Frederick) failed to disclose an estimated $1 million in income from property sales since 2004. Bartlett has declined to voluntarily release income tax returns that could potentially clear up the matter. Bartlett is not legally required to do so.
“This could be a serious legal matter involving more than $1 million in real estate sales,” said Dougherty in a statement. “I hope he will do everything he can to clear this up.”
The former Frederick mayor continued: “Bartlett's explanation was that he and his staff were confused, that they could not read his handwriting, and he did not read the form that he signed. That explanation raises a bigger question and it is not a question he can answer by a press release - or through a spokesperson. As a resident of the 6th District, I want to hear the answers directly from him.”
“Bartlett has been reluctant to face me or the public. It’s time to step forward and clear this up.”
Dougherty is currently running against Bartlett in Maryland’s 6th District. Bartlett has held the seat since 1992.
The Bartlett offices were contacted for comment by PolitickerMD.com, but were unavailable at the time this article was published.

Dem4Roscoe?
How in the world can you call yourself a Democrat, and actually be in favor of Bartlett in this election? Is Bartlett in any way a Democrat? Does he vote AT ALL for environmental protection? Does he support fair taxation and hope to overturn the destructive Bush tax cuts? Is he in favor of a woman's reproductive choice? Come to think of it, I cannot find a single issue that I would say Bartlett is even slightly Democratic on. This being said, I would hope that enough would be reason to vote for Dougherty. Now add in the reality that Bartlett is fiscally irresponsible (which is what Republican really means in modern terms)... I do not understand how ANYBODY that identifies his or her self as a Democrat could seriously vote for this man?
Issues
Maybe if Roscoe was willing to discuss the issues in the past, Dougherty would be more likely to make this a campaign on just issues. But since he's so shy about discussing anything, she should be doing anything possible to raise the profile of the race, which will eventually call for some issue discussing.
I agree "Dem"4Roscoe
"I dare the candidates to discuss real issues."
I would like to 2nd your call...a call that Dougherty has made many many times...let's have Roscoe stop avoiding discussing his record with the voters of the 6th district and FINALLY agree to a debate!
Lets talk about the issues please
If Congressman Bartlett's personal finances become the focus of the upcoming race for his seat, we are surely in for a boring political season.
I dare the candidates to discuss real issues - Crime (accelerated during the Dougherty Regime), Taxes - What happens to the State and County coffers when our property values which have been declining steadily are reappraised at lower values?, Gas Prices - Conservation etc., Utility Prices in our District, Sensible treatment of Immigrants (legal and illegal), and how to make Congressional District a better place to live.
