Kratovil: Harris’ voting record ‘demonstrates extremism’

ROYAL OAK - Speaking at a weekend fundraiser where he tried to stress a bipartisan political approach, state's Attorney Frank Kratovil (D-Stevensville) accused his Republican opponent of being outside the political mainstream and practicing "politics as usual."

"If you look at my opponent's background, he thinks things are going great in this country," Kratovil said of state Sen. Andy Harris (R-Cockeysville). "He believes we don't need change and I believe we do."

Kratovil continued criticizing his opponent. "If you look at votes my opponent has had in the Maryland legislature on a whole host of issues, it demonstrates extremism that I don't think benefits the majority of the people in this district," he said.

Harris Campaign Manager Chris Meekins defended his candidate in an interview with PolitickerMD.com.

"Andy's record on both fighting for lower taxes and less wasteful government spending is exactly what voters in the 1st District want," Meekins said.

Kratovil began his stump speech with a brief introduction and a few jokes, but the meat of his speech focused on policy and his opponent.

"I'm running for congress because I feel the same way that the vast majority of Americans in this country feel: they are tired of politics as usual in Washington," Kratovil told the crowd. "They're tired of the negative hate kind of campaigning. They're very, very tired of the extreme partisan nature in politics and I think people are very, very frustrated."

He continued: "Obviously I'm a Democrat and I'm a Democrat for a reason, but I prefer to think of partisanship the way that John F. Kennedy did. What he said was ‘principle was more important than party, and sometimes party loyalty demands to much'."

The MD-1 Democratic nominee continued to stress bipartisanship and noted his support for the right to own firearms, in addition to calling illegal immigration one of his pet peeves.

Kratovil then condemned Harris for taking money from the Club for Growth, which he described as an "extreme economic group that goes around the country knocking off moderate Republicans."

The Sunday fundraiser was hosted by Fred and Leslie Israel and Tim Quinn. Tickets were priced at $25 per person, $50 per family and $250 for VIP.

According to Tim McCan, Kratovil's campaign manager, about 240 guests attended the event, which raised about $15,000.

Attendees included former U.S. Sen. John B. Breaux (D-La.), former U.S. Sen. Birch Bayh (D-Ind.), Gov. Harry Hughes (D), state's Attorney Scott Patterson (D-Talbot County), and Del. Norman Conway (D-Salisbury).

Kartovil and Harris are currently competing for Maryland's 1st Congressional District seat. MD-1 includes 12 of the 24 counties in the state, which encompasses all of the Eastern Shore and portions of Harford, Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties.

First of all, you should

First of all, you should know that the beach funds are not earmarks. They are a federal grant and an agreement between OC and the Army COE. And if it weren't for the DNC and Steny Hoyer, Krap-ovil wouldn't have any talking points either. And isn't Frank for universal health care? I think he has said that himself...that is definitely a liberal viewpoint, despite what he wants to think. So consequently he can then be labeled a Liberal. If Frankie-boy is so sensitive, I'm not sure why he decided to run for Congress.

Talk about name calling

"Krap-ovil was quoted in the Daily Times (the Salisbury Daily) as being against "namecalling and labeling..." yet he spends an entire speech criticizing and labeling Harris."

First, Kratovil did not do either. Attacking your opponents record is not name calling, it's pointing out the facts. The only name calling that goes on appears to be from the Harris campaign, as in the Shoreman's post.

As far as Harris and fiscal responsiblity, exactly where will the funds for dredging and beach management come from? Since these are just two of the "earmarks" that constitue the funds the Shore gets from Washington. Every dollar we get comes in the form of an earmark because the GOP has stripped the discretionary budget to the bone in their effort to be "fiscally responsible." Of course reducing the tax coffers by 1.9% of GDP and increasing spending by 2.2% of GDP, while claiming the tax cuts increase revenue is exactly the kind of doublespeak and twisting of facts we have come to expect from the GOP, so why should Harris be any different. Afterall, if it weren't for the RNC talking points and the "Kratovil is O'Malley" sound bite, the Harris campaign wouldn't have anything to say.

Annapolis has raised taxes

Annapolis has raised taxes twice in 10 years. A property tax increase in 2003 and then the now infamous tax increase in 2007.

Harris voted for the 2003 property tax increase.

They've cut taxes in that same period once - the computer services tax. Harris voted against the tax cut.

Bottom line...Harris' rhetoric on taxes does not match his record.

...

Harris didn't say he was for fiscal irresponsibility...as a general rule, he supports tax cuts. Judging by his record in the Senate, where he has fought against tax increases and has been for tax cuts, I'd have to say that I'm pretty sure he had his reasons for not supporting this one...I'm glad you know how to cherry pick legislation. How much does Frankie-boy pay you?

Harris says he's FOR tax

Harris says he's FOR tax cuts. Yet, he voted against a NET tax cut during the last legislative session.

Harris had the opportunity to walk the talk this last session and he failed.

Talk about being a hypocrite!!!!

Hypocrite

Krap-ovil was quoted in the Daily Times (the Salisbury Daily) as being against "namecalling and labeling..." yet he spends an entire speech criticizing and labeling Harris. There's nothing wrong with bashing your opponent, just don't say you're against it then do the exact opposite. Of course, what should we expect from a double-talking Democrat? Furthermore, his speech sounds exactly like two other ones I've heard him give...really should change it up Frank, don't get boring...oh wait...too late.
