Harris raises $430K in 2Q, $600K cash on hand

State Sen. Andy Harris (R-Cockeysville), who is running for congress in Maryland’s 1st Congressional District, is reporting $431,550.58 in contributions in the second quarter, and has $609,482.95 cash on hand. Harris also lent his campaign $100,000, according to the FEC.

Harris has raised $1,905,305.42 in total contributions to date for this election.

“[We] surpassed all of our internal goals,” said Chris Meekins, Harris’ campaign manager, in an interview with PolitickerMD.com. “We’re continuing to grow.”

Meekins also said the campaign was planning a TV spot at some point in the future, but did not reveal further details. Though, Meekins did not go in depth about the campaigns financial strategy, he did say, “I plan to spend it!”

Harris is running against state's Attorney Frank Kratovil (D-Stevensville) for the MD-1 seat. Kratovil has not filed with the FEC yet.

Bled Dry - It's amazing how

Bled Dry -

It's amazing how you O'Malley liberals invade our district and think you know what you are talking about. The First Congressional District gave Ehrlich 67% and Bush 62%. It IS conservative. We only voted for Wayne because the lesser of two evils compared to the goofballs the Dems had running. Just by the fact that you think Wayne got elected because he brought pork into the district or because he voted to allow us to "see more wildlife" is plain nuts. Andy Harris will represent us. He wants less government and he wants to fix this energy crisis. What's Kratovil want? He wants to go down to DC to "be an ally of Martin O'Malley". Well guess what...that may fly in PG County, but not here on the Shore or in the First Congresional District. One Martin O'Malley is more than enough...

Wasn't Kratovil supposed to

Wasn't Kratovil supposed to get a load of money from the DCCC??? And they put how much exactly into his media buys? And 80,000 from one event Frank, while I'll admit that was a good haul...I never want to get 25% of my fundraising from one event...but wait, you've got all those District 1 families to give you money...

Bled Thinks Frank Kratovil Is A Fiscal Conservative....

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

My WORD - my eyes are tearing up I'm laughing so hard!

Kratovil should be killing Andy in fundraising

since this is a Democratic year, but he is not. The DNC and DCCC are way ahead of their GOP counterparts. If Kratovil had $850K on hand, Harris would be nervous. I wouldn't plop my money on Kratovil's chances.

The myth of fiscal conservatism

It is a sad state of affairs in American politics when money supplants real debate about important issues. The media always focuses on fundraising, at the expense of getting information about where the candidates stand, and meaningful public discourse.

Andy Harris wants to be defined by his sense of inevitability, by his fundraising prowess; this is clearly indicated by the candidate’s smugness and, by all appearances, his outward belief that the 1st District owes him it’s seat in Congress. The only problem with the Harris campaign plan is that Frank Kratovil stands in the way, and he is proving to be a much bigger threat than anyone in the Harris camp thought he would be.

Kratovil’s own fundraising is looking up, right when it should, as election-day looms larger in the windshield. And Harris seems to forget that this is the same district that elected Wayne Gilchrest for the better part of two decades, yet somehow Harris thinks that, all of a sudden, it took a huge rightward swing, while for the most part, the rest of the entire country moved a smidge leftward, away from nearly a decade of failed Bush policies. Logic argues that Harris may find out how wrong his assumption was in November.

And the real question, the one that we aren’t going to get answered because we focus to much on fundraising is this: where does ‘fiscal conservative’ end and being a wise advocate for the district begin? Scores of federal programs have already been bled dry by eight years of Bush and five years of war: I suppose Harris now wants to come in and cut a little bit more. But the question remains, when the programs hit home, will Harris continue to spout an ideology, or will he go to the mat fighting for what his district needs.

The Shore gets millions for our wildlife refuges that support vibrant economy of hunting, fishing, and wildlife watching. We get millions for road projects that help our people get to where they work and play. So does Harris support such ‘pork barrel’ spending, or does he only oppose it when it is in someone else’s district? This whole fiscal conservative thing doesn’t hold much water, I don’t want an ideologue, I want a Representative. I can see why Dr. Harris is such a good anesthesiologist; his policy ideas put me to sleep.

Harris' Loan

I understand that, but where I come from, if it is a "loan" you have an expectation of getting paid back. Otherwise it is a personal contribution to your campaign. Either way it is sneaky shenanigans from Dr. Demento.

re: Lineir

Actually I don't think he does need to pay himself back. Technically candidates are allowed to spend whatever they want of their own money on their own campaign.

Harris is scared

Wow I agree 100% with the comments of Johnson Lineir. Pumping $100K into your own campaign and then claiming you are meeting all fundraising goals. Seems to me that the Harris campaign is a lot more nervous about this race then they are letting on.

Once we get closer to the election and the DCCC starts putting some resources into this race Harris will be in real trouble.

Once Again, Andy Pumps His Numbers With Loan

“[We] surpassed all of our internal goals,” said Chris Meekins, Harris’ campaign manager, in an interview with PolitickerMD.com. “We’re continuing to grow.”

Looks like what's growing is the size of Andy's loan to his campaign. Andy reached into his pocket yet again ON THE LAST DAY OF THE QUARTER to loan himself $100,000 so that his cash on hand looks better than it really is.

Maybe he doesn't know he needs to pay himself back, eh?

This is the kind of Tom DeLay and Karl Rove inspired chicanery that should have no place in Maryland's 1st District.

Geez, Louise, Andy, why not just loan yourself $1 million so your numbers REALLY look good.

Tool.
