Edwards holds first in a series of coffee house discussions

U.S. Rep. Donna EdwardsU.S. Rep. Donna EdwardsLARGO – U.S. Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Fort Washington) Wednesday held the first in a series of coffee house discussions.

“I’ve been trying to figure out a way that as a member of Congress that we get out into the community where people are gathered,” she told reporters. Edwards said that the events would be held regularly at coffee shops and other venues throughout the 4th District.

“It’s a way for me to really hear from people directly,” she said. “I’m not just here for show.”

Edwards took questions from a group of about a dozen on the patio of a Largo Starbucks.

One attendee asked Edwards about her stance on FISA.

“I care deeply about national security,” she said, but also stated there was no reason the federal government couldn’t “get a warrant” to eavesdrop on Americans.

The new Congresswoman also answered questions about education and jobs.

“Community colleges are a huge asset to our community,” Edwards told the crowd, adding “the minimum wage should be tied to inflation.”

The campaign is yet to have announced the details about the next coffee house meeting, but Edwards said she would be holding about one or two each month.
