Dana Beyer, M.D.Dr. Dana Beyer said she decided to drop her bid to replace the late Del. Jane Lawton at the conclusion of a candidate’s forum last night because she knew she wasn’t going to win.
“It was clear to me that I was not going to be selected,” said Beyer, a health care advisor to Councilwoman Duchy Trachtenberg. “I wanted to make it easier for the central committee to make their decision.”
Beyer indicated that she had spoken to members of the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee prior to the event, and informed them that she was contemplating withdrawal. She did not make a final decision until the forum was about to begin, and had yet to inform committee members of her decision.
“It is not the right time for me,” Beyer said during closing remarks at last night’s forum.
The veteran political activist said she felt a responsibility to participate in the forum because many of her past supporters were in the audience, and she wanted to raise the issues that were important to them. Beyer was unsuccessful in her bid to win the delegate seat in 2006, but she did receive 5,128 votes (12.3%) in the Democratic primary. Last night, she raised a variety of issues, from the environment to equality for all people.
“There were a lot of people there last night, some who had voted for me,” Beyer said. “There aren’t many public opportunities to thank people and to raise important issues. I had a responsibility and a desire to speak out.”
Beyer did not endorse anyone for the seat, but did say that she had “respect” for all the contenders. She also highlighted the importance of experienced elected officials – perhaps a wink and a nod of support for Carr, a Kensington Councilman.
“It takes a lot of courage to put yourself out to the voters,” Beyer said. “This is a smart group of people.”
Four other candidates remain in the race, including Rick Kessler, George English, Roz Pelles and Fredric Cooper.

Forget it. Carr is running
Forget it. Carr is running the table and you're just upset because Roz isn't feeling the love.
Montgomery County Democratic Party Poop
For all its lofty, self important chit chat about democratic process and Democratic principles, it is clear that the Montgomery County Democratic party is run by a bunch petty schoolgirls who only take joy in catfighting or worse, yet, pushing others into a catfight.
They obviously forced Oscar Ramirez and Dana Beyer from the race. I've heard they threatened supporters of Kessler and tried to stop Pellez from getting in.
Who is Al Carr? Is he that bad a candidate? If he's the second coming of our lord, then why does he need these thugs and their tactics to get "elected"?
If you doubt that the fix is in, go on the MoCo Dems website and you'll see that there's a list with all the names of the people who support Carr. But you have to scroll down for a few minutes and squint really hard to find out that she's got the support of Anna Gutierrez, NARAL and, oh yeah, Jane Lawton's family!!! Kesler's list isn't as extensive, but ya still gotta hunt for the names. I don't even see anything for the other candidates, but who knows, maybe they're stuff isnt getting put up atall.
Next time I heaar holier-than-thou talk about democracy from the montgomery democratic party crowd, please excuse me if I happen to be standing next to you when I barf
